Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Externships
Overview
The University of Louisville Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. We accept two residents per year into our integrated MD/Certificate program. Facilities in which we currently provide care include University of Louisville Hospital (a Level-1 Trauma Center), Norton Children’s Hospital (a Level-1 Pediatric Trauma Center) and Jewish Hospital.
The externship program is designed for D3 and D4 students who intend to apply to an OMS residency and who seek more intensive exposure to the specialty. Externs are accepted year-round with some exceptions (see below). The externships range from one to four weeks, based on candidate and program availability. Up to two externs per session may be scheduled. Externs will participate in all educational, clinical, emergency and operating room activities with our resident staff exposing them to the wide scope of our specialty. If staying in the hospital call room, externs will participate in regular and trauma call.
A call room may be open in the hospital, free of charge. The residency coordinator can inform you of the availability when booking your externship dates. Garage parking is available at a discount for those driving to campus; Uber or other ride services can be used if flying in from out of town. Food options include the hospital cafeteria in the basement of our building, nearby food trucks and restaurants.
