ULARC researchers were well represented at the 2023 meeting of the Research Society on Alcoholism

Dr. Irina Kirpich and Dr. Josiah Hardesty were organizers of the RSA Symposium "Novel mechanistic insights into alcohol-associated liver disease: from single- and multi-omics perspectives."

Dr. Vatsalya Vatsalya organized symposium "Novel gut-brain axis in alcohol use disorder: clinical domains, mechanisms and treatment."

ULARC members gave several talks and presented several posters at this meeting, held June 24-28, 2023 in Bellevue, WA, including:

Oral presentations

  • Dr. Craig McClain: "Interactions of chemical toxicants, diet and alcohol in the production of liver injury"
  • Dr. Irina Kirpich: "Leveraging multi-omics data to elucidate novel mechanisms of soluble epoxide hydrolase inhibition-mediated protection against alcohol-associated liver disease."
  • Dr. Vatsalya Vatsalya: "Illustration of novel gut-brain axis for craving, alcohol withdrawal, withdrawal-associated depression in patients with alcohol use disorder."
  • Aakarsha Rao, a Ph.D. student in Dr. Shirish Barve's lab, presented a talk titled "Sex differences in butyrate producing bacterial community and pathobionts in the gut microbiome of people with HIV (PWH) with heavy alcohol use."

Poster presentations

  • Smita Ghare et al., "Ethanol modulates Sirt1-Nfkb-p300 axis leading to upregulation of hepatic ccl2 expression and consequent liver inflammation and injury"
  • Jeff Warner et al., "Epitranscriptomic alterations due to soluble epoxide hydrolase inhibition in experimental alcohol-associated liver disease"
  • Lucy Sloan et al., "Effects of binge alcohol on Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis in 3XTG-AD mice"
  • Mary Nancy Walter et al., "Sexual dimorphism in Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Phosphatase 1 (MKP1) dependent er stress and hepatocyte injury in ALD"
