For Students

The OTT is committed to the support of our student creators as well.  Under the University IP Policy, “students who independently create Intellectual Property arising out of their participation in programs of study at the University, and that do not result from their employment by the University, will retain the legal rights thereto. Intellectual Property created by students through the use of Specialized Resources or in connection with their employment by the University is owned by the ULRF.”  If a student is performing work under a grant or sponsored research, University ownership may also arise.   Students should note that even if their innovations are not subject to the policy, the OTT is here to assist them with guidance and information, and that they do have the option to elect to formally go through the OTT subject to the same obligations and benefits as any University Creator.

The OTT is always excited to come to your classroom and inform our student body about the basics (and benefits) of intellectual property and related issues.  If this interests you, approach your professor and ask them to arrange for an OTT member to guest-lecture.

The OTT also uses students as interns, providing valuable work exposure (and resume builders) to business activities in the areas of start-up companies, science, business, law and/or policy.  While a very limited number of paid internships are available, several University colleges have allowed students to register for internship/externship classroom credit in exchange for working at the OTT.
