Maternal-Fetal Medicine

The faculty in the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine specializes in the care and treatment of high-risk pregnancies. In addition, we are concerned with complete obstetric care throughout a woman's pregnancy, delivery and postpartum period.

Our Maternal Fetal Medicine faculty are experts in dealing with pregnancy complications including:

  • Heart disease and hypertension
  • Cervical insufficiency
  • Preeclampsia (toxemia)
  • Placental problems and Premature rupture of membranes
  • Multiple birth (twins, triplets or more)
  • Diabetes or other endocrine disorders
  • Infectious diseases
  • Kidney or gastrointestinal disease
  • History of pre-term labor and delivery and history of miscarriage
  • Birth defects (congenital abnormalities)
  • Pregnancy after 40 years of age

Stanley A. Gall, M.D. is a strong resident advocate with emphasis on student and resident teaching. Dr. Gall's major clinical interests are in infectious diseases in Obstetrics and Gynecology and in the immunology of vaccines and infectious diseases. Dr. Gall is the principal investigator for HPV-16 and HPV-18 vaccine trials in addition to other infectious diseases. Dr. Gall is the Editor of the textbook "Multiple Pregnancy and Delivery" and co-editor of the textbook "Principles and Practice of Medical Therapy in Pregnancy," 3rd edition. Dr. Vernon Cook brings expertise in chorionic villus sampling, per umbilical blood sampling (PUBS), ultrasound and has an experimental interest in pre term labor.

General Obstetrics
We offer training in General Obstetrics through the General Obstetrics Section of Maternal Fetal Medicine. This program offers training in expert care for pregnant women who are in good health or who have common medical conditions. All aspects of childbirth and studied, and students are trained as surgeons so that they can handle any complications that may arise, including Caesarean sections and episiotomies.

Clinical Service
The clinical services of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine are provided through University OB/GYN Associates and University GYN/OB Foundation, which are both part of University Women's HealthCare.
