COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TARGET AUDIENCE
The ongoing outbreak of novel influenza A (H1N1) continues to expand in the United States and internationally. The CDC expects that more cases, more hospitalizations and more deaths from this outbreak will occur over the coming days and weeks.

This symposium will provide key information to:
1) help reduce transmission and illness severity and 2) provide HSC faculty, public health officials and healthcare professionals the information to address the challenges posed by this emergency.


CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT
Physician -
The University of Louisville Continuing Health Sciences Education office designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nursing - This program has been approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing for 1.2 contact hours through the University of Louisville School of Nursing, provider number 3-0046-01-2013-94, expiration date January 31, 2013. The Kentucky Board of Nursing approval of an individual nursing education provider does not constitute endorsement of program content. INSTRUCTIONS & REGISTRATION
The course takes approximately one hour. During the course you will watch and listen to a video lecture and view a handout. You will need a high speed internet connection to view the lecture. You'll also need a computer with Windows and Internet Explorer; you cannot take the course on an Apple Macintosh computer or on any other computer that does not have Windows and Internet Explorer. After reviewing the materials, you will take an online test and receive your results instantly.

If you pass, you will be taken to a web page confirming your continuing education credit, which you will need to print for your records. If you do not pass, you may retake the course as many times as necessary without registering again.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1) Describe the specific role that the microbiology laboratory plays regarding safety, specimen collection, laboratory detection, and interaction with institutional epidemiology program, the State of Kentucky Laboratory Program and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as it regards the H1N1 strain of the Influenza A, Swine Strain, Virus.

2) Implement infection prevention and control strategies rapidly and effectively with efficient use of resources.

3) Review the clinical presentation and management of Swine Flu in adults.

4) Implement the most recent guidelines for prophylaxis and treatment of Swine Flu.

5) Recommend the optimal techniques for obtaining viral specimens.

6) Describe the epidemiology of Swine Flu.
