Course Description and Target Audience
This program addresses the issues of patient safety and adverse events in the obstetric patient.  Speakers from the fields of obstetrics, anesthesia, surgery and neonatology will present strategies to decrease adverse events with the goal of improving patient safety, decreasing patient injury and decreasing liability losses.

The target audience is Physicians practicing in Obstetrics, Neonatology, Anesthesiology and Surgery. It also includes Obstetrical Nurses and all other healthcare professionals practicing in these areas.

Optional Churchill Downs Event
Opening day of Churchill Downs is Saturday, April 24, 2010 – the week preceding Derby.  Tickets for opening day, in conjunction with the Greater Louisville Medical Society (GLMS), are available for $75.  This includes inside seating in the Skye Terrace and a buffet lunch.  Contact Sandy Fowler at (502) 409-8809 for tickets.  A drawing will be held during the afternoon session for two complimentary tickets.  Winner must be present.

Learning Objectives
1) Define and give examples of defensive barriers that will improve patient safety.
2) Recognize risks to patient and fetus due to lack of prenatal care which precipitates crisis management.
3) Identify factors that can contribute to enhanced patient safety on Labor & Delivery.
4) Apply Failure Mode & Effect Analysis to critical processes in healthcare.
5) Identify obstetrical problems that create difficulties for the anesthesiologist.
6) Review the new 3-tier classification for fetal heart tracings.
7) Alert obstetrician to labor events that may contribute to poor neonatal outcome.
8) List the barriers to adoption of EHR.
9) Identify healthcare providers need for immunization for prevention of transmission and contact of disease.
10) Delineate common procedures requiring operation during pregnancy and strategies for their management.
