Course Description and Target Audience
There are many issues that must be considered when caring for the elderly. This symposium is designed to disseminate to healthcare professionals the latest information on the treatment and care of the elderly population  This symposium will address these issues by providing information that must be considered when dealing with mental health in the geriatric patient. In addition, the latest information on the care and treatment of the elderly population will be disseminated.

The target audience for this symposium is Physicians in the following disciplines: Primary Care, Geriatrics, Internal Medicine and Psychiatry, as well as Nurses, Psychologists and Social Workers.

Physicians -
The University of Louisville Continuing Health Sciences Education office designates this educational activity for a maximum of 6.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with their participation in the activity.

Nurses -
This program has been approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing for 7.5 contact hours through the University of Louisville School of Nursing, provider number 3-0046-01-2013-103, expiration date January 31, 2013. The Kentucky Board of Nursing approval of an individual nursing education provider does not constitute endorsement of program content. Participants must complete entire session, provide license and social security number and complete evaluation to receive contact hours.

Social Workers -
Application for Social Work credit has been filed with the Kentucky Board of Social Work. Determination of credit is pending.

AAFP -
This activity has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 6.25 prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians.

The Ninth Annual Irving B. Perlstein Gerontology Lectureship
Dr. Irving B. Perlstein was a respected member of the Medical Staff at Jewish Hospital during his long and rewarding career. A native of Buffalo, New York and a graduate of the University of Buffalo in 1939, Dr. Perlstein completed his internship and residency at Jewish Hospital.

Specializing in Internal Medicine, Dr. Perlstein was recognized for his significant research on aging and thyroid dysfunction. His book, “Diet Is Not Enough,” was published in 1963.

Dr. Perlstein passed away on August 6, 1995 and this lectureship was created by his family as a living memorial to him and his commitment to his patients and healthcare. It is with great pride we present the Ninth Annual Irving B. Perlstein Gerontology Lectureship in his honor and memory.

Learning Objectives
1) Review the latest information on diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's Disease.
2) Utilize a homecare program to further continuity of care for the frail homebound elderly.
3) Discuss methods of diagnosing and treating delirium in the older patient.
4) Demonstrate methods of managing problem behaviors in
dementia without using psychotropic drugs.
5) Explain the recent changes on F-tags for psychotropic drugs in the nursing home.
6) Recognize substance problems in the aging population especially in relation to the emerging wave of "boomers."
7) Critique the regulatory problems in the nursing home from a state and national level.
