CELEBRATE NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY ON FRIDAY, FEB. 3RD

Get Healthy Now is partnering with the American Heart Association in the fight against heart disease. Wear Red to raise awareness about the number one killer of women. Visit the AHA website to learn more about this important initiative and ways to reduce your risk: “Go Red for Women”!

Get Healthy Now Road Show:  Promoting Healthy Hearts on Belknap, HSC and Shelby Campus!  Get Healthy Now is partnering with the American Heart Association and Sodexo in the fight against heart disease. In support of National Heart Month, we are offering FREE blood pressure checks, stress balls, health tips, heart healthy recipes and apples every Wednesday, February 8th, 15th, and 22nd,  at your preferred location/department.  Complete this form to request a presentation for your unit!

 

 Eat Well:  Nutrition Information and Resource

  • Have you been told you're at risk for pre-diabetes? Take action today by joining Get Healthy Now for the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Programs that begin this month on both Belknap and HSC campus! The program helps those at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a modest amount of weight in order to reduce their chances of developing the disease.   • What’s for Dinner? Get answers by enrolling in February’s Family Wellness Coaching sessions on “Food Fun.”  Learn simple strategies, recommendations, and sample kid approved recipes.  For parents and caregivers of all ages: birth – teen.  Sessions are from Noon – 1 pm February 20 & 27 on Belknap and February 22 & 29 on HSC.  Learn more and enroll today!
  • A Garden Full of Goodness! Dates set for Garden Commons workshops Garden Commons has set workshops to help people who want to learn more about gardening. They cover starting seeds indoor, growing things in containers, herbs and planting. Read more.

  • My Heart, My Life: Learn about your heart and "Life's Simple 7. Take the "My LifeCheck" offered by the American Heart Association to get started today!
  • Join in for the Heart Healthy Happy Hour! A happy heart is a healthy heart--join in on Feb 2 for this community event. The evening will include cooking demos, healthy appetizers, screenings and more.

    • Book Club meets Monday, February 13th from 12-1:30 p.m.--Belknap Campus, Ekstrom W210.  In March, we will be meeting on HSC!

  • Dancing can be a great way to stay active during the cold weather months.  Check out this interactive resource offered by United Health Care. Choose your music style, duration and intensity. Then…have some fun!
  • Make a splash and stay active with Get Healthy Now Water Fitness classes! Join us for the spring session of Water Fitness classes. Classes held Tues/Thur from 12-12:45 p.m. at the Natatorium on Belknap campus. Enrollment is limited, so sign up today! Visit the webpage for full details and to enroll.

  • Get Healthy Now Employee Dedicated Fitness Facility: GHN is dedicated to providing a wide variety of health, fitness and wellness opportunities for all faculty and staff to help them continue their role as healthy and productive members of the University of Louisville community.

    Monthly Focus:  Personal Health, Safety and Supporting Policies

    • The Kentucky Rx Coalition assists covered employees and their dependents with any issues related to their Rx benefit.  Read this month's information about cholesterol medication: high blood cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease.

      • To learn more about this resource, ask questions related to medications as it relates to adverse reactions, drug interactions or over-the-counter medications, contact a Coalition pharmacist.     • Feb 27 - March 1: UofL BABA WEEK 2012 Body Awareness Body Appreciation Week Keynote Event: Bryant Terry & Friends! Eco-chef, local food and food justice activist, cookbook author will speak on Thursday March 1st at 6 PM in UofL SAC MPR. Tickets: $10/ticket: faculty, staff & public.     • "Good for YOUR Body. Great for EVERY Body." You should be seeing and hearing this message all throughout the community on TV, radio, in newspapers and on buses and billboards. Developed with the help of local research including neighborhood focus groups, the campaign includes an easy to access website, www.comeoneverybody.org, which provides specific information about how to be more active and engaged in the community’s efforts to be healthier.
