Certification

This page is dedicated to providing certification information and services for current education students.

The Regulation on Kentucky Teaching Certificates - 704 KAR 20:670 - went into effect for teacher education candidates admitted to a Teacher Education program beginning January 1, 1998:

  • The issuance of teaching certificates for each grade level is being revised by the Kentucky Department of Education.
  • The content in some teaching fields is being revised by the Kentucky Department of Education.
CEHD class

Candidates seeking rank change and/or certification must complete and submit an official TC-1 form [PDF]. Request for teacher certification or rank must be submitted directly to the College of Education & Human Development's Education Advising Center, Room 124 Education. An official university transcript and test scores (if applicable) must be included with the submission of the TC-1 form. Download a copy of the TC-1 form [PDF]. Submit a request for a 15-Hour salary increase.

Specific information regarding regulations pertaining to Kentucky teaching certificates are available through the College of Education and Human Development Education Advising Center. Please allow 48 to 72 hours for responses to e-mail questions.

Fees for Certification

The Kentucky Department of Education assesses the following certification fees:
Statement of eligibility for internship no charge
Limited (one-year) certificates no charge
Rank Change $50.00
Subsequent certificates - (in-state and out-of-state)
Regular Certificate (Initial or Renewal) $50.00
Each transaction to add area(s) of certificate $50.00
Five-year substitute certificate $15.00
Duplicate certificate (official copy) $25.00
Extension of limited certification $35.00
(Renewal includes all previously approved certifications and endorsements)

Note:

  • Please make certified check or money order payable to KY State Treasurer.
  • If certification cannot be issued, a $10 processing fee will be retained by the Division of Certification.
  • Fees must be forwarded to the Educational Professional Standards Board's Division of Certification with a "Request Form for Certification" separately from the completed TC-1 form by the applicant.
  • The TC-1 form should be filled out and signed by the district school superintendent (if the applicant is currently teaching) and mailed/delivered to the Education Advising Center. To request an official transcript, please go to the Registrar's Office website. Transcripts should be sent to the Education Advising Center.

Testing Requirements for Certification

Information about the required Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) test and passing scores for the PRAXIS II specialty exams in each certification area are available on the Kentucky Educational Professional Standards Board web page.
