HONORS CALENDAR April 21 April 22 April 23-29 May 10 Congrats to our Award-winning Honors Student... Sarah Jane Bodell was runner-up in the undergraduate division of the 2008 Phi Alpha Theta Regional History Conference hosted by U of L’s own chapter here on March 15th. Her paper was titled "Women and the Nicaraguan Presidential Election of 1990." ...and congrats to our Award-winning Honors Director! For the past five years, Dr. Richardson has proved to be a key supporter of the University's annual Alternative Spring Break program. Through funding assistance from the Honors Program, he has ensured that the program is both a success and that its cost to students remains within their reach. Because of his forward thinking, Dr. Richardson has encouraged Honors faculty to include service-learning in their courses, as well as to collaborate with the local community, such as The Partnership for a Green City, which brings UofL together with Metro Louisville Government and Jefferson County Public Schools. Through his support of the Honors Volunteer Program, he encourages students to be engaged citizens. For his continuing efforts to forge connections between UofL students and the community, Dr. Richardson receives a SOUL Award. Fulbright AwardsPaige Battcher (Finance B.S./ B.A. ’08) has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship for Thailand. Paige spent the fall semester studying at The Hague University in the Netherlands, on an exchange program through the College of Business at UofL. She will be working with high school students in Thailand. Chris Cunningham (Political Science B.A.’05; Queen’s University Belfast MA in Comparative Ethnic Conflict with a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship) has been awarded a Fulbright research grant to Sri Lanka.
Ashley Duncan (Law) has been awarded a Fulbright research grant to Finland for 2008-09. Her research project is, “Exploring the Finnish Model of Farm Animal Welfare”. Erin McCoy (Spanish) has been awarded a Fulbright teaching grant to Malaysia. This year more than ever before, across the country, universities offering graduate students admission with funding in their programs are refusing to defer their offers to allow a student to do their Fulbright first. Fulbright scholarships can not be deferred. National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowships Kelly Houston Funk (Mathematics) has received an NSF graduate fellowship for continued graduate work on geometric group theory, which, in Kelly’s words, “combines geometry, analysis, and topology to solve problems in algebraic group theory.” She will be pursuing her doctoral studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Jesse Jacobsen (Chemistry) has received an NSF graduate fellowship in chemistry. His projected is titled “Total Synthesis of Platencin and Analog Compounds.” Jesse has published three papers and been accepted for study at Columbia, UC Berkeley, Illinois and Michigan. Critical Language Scholarships Ashley Harris (Political Science/English) has been awarded a Critical Language scholarship to study beginning Arabic in Jordan. Joseph “Lee” Young (Anthropology) has been awarded a Critical Language scholarship to study advanced Russia in the Russian Federation. Lee was an alternate for the scholarship last year. Paul Meinshausen (Anthropology, ‘07) has been awarded a Critical Language scholarship to study beginning Arabic in Tunisia. Paul, who is currently a Fulbright Scholar in Turkey, will decline the CLS in order to accept the very prestigious Charles G. Koch Summer Fellowship which gives him the opportunity for an internship at the Cato Institute, a Washington, D.C. based think tank. Jack Kent Cooke Continuing Scholar Graduate Award Jessica Dawkins (History with a concentration in Humanities, ’08) has been studying at the University of Louisville supported by the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship since she earned her Associate’s degree at JCTC in May ’06. An unusual aspect of this program was that it included two years of professionally mentoring by the national JKC foundation by way of gatherings of the undergrad JCK scholars. Now, in recognition the continued excellence of her work at UofL, Jessica has been awarded a Jack Kent Cooke Continuing Scholar Graduate Award. As with the prize she won as an undergraduate the financial amount of this scholarship was open-ended and she could have studied at any institution in the U.S. or abroad. Since her end-goal is to become an expert on Louisville history both her degree selections have remained close to home. She will now pursue a PhD in Public History at the University of Cincinnati. Teach for America Justin Tooley (Political Science, ’08) has been selected as a Teach for America Corps member. Justin will use his academic and leadership skills (former SCG Vice-President, A&S Senator, McConnell Scholar) teaching in Memphis, Tennessee. Clarissa Allen (English, ’08) has been selected as a Teach for America Corps member. She will be teaching elementary-aged children in Denver, Colorado. This year 11 students from the University of Louisville applied for Teach for America. The number of applicants from here was the same last year. Nationally the number of applicants this year rose by 143%. So a very hearty congratulations to Justin Tooley and Clarissa Allen on meeting these new odds with their selection. HVP -- Honors Volunteer Program The next HVP meeting will be held in the Etscorn Honors Center Classroom in the fall semester, August, 2008. Pizza will be provided. All HVP meetings will be held the last Tuesday of each month at the same time and place. New leadership will be in place for another exciting year of volunteer activities! Thanks to Allie Martin, who has spearheaded HVP's activities this academic year. She is graduating, but has left an indelible mark on HVP through her commitment to service. Before every event, you will receive e-mail with the exact time, locations, car pool instructions and directions. Please also check out the Facebook group Honors Volunteer Program.

Calling all Honors students! On Friday, April 25 from 4:30-7:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 26 from 2:00 p.m. until we finish, students will gather in the Honors House with the mission to clean and beautify the House—inside and out! Do you have a couch you would like to donate or chairs? Are you handy with carpentry, upholstering, or yard work? Or are you good with a bottle of windex and a roll of paper towels? If any or all of these categories apply to you please volunteer to help us! Let’s make the House beautiful again! If you have any other questions, comments, donations, or otherwise, please contact Sarah Jane Bodell. Box Tops for Excellence! Louisville Environmental Reader: Exploring Local Issues, Events and Experiences The project "Louisville Environmental Reader: Exploring Local Issues,
Events, and Experiences" was a collaborative project between U of L's University
Honors Program, the U of L Center for Environmental Education, the JCPS
Center for Environmental Education and The Partnership for a Green City.
Honor students were given copies of the Partnership for a Green City
Principles
and asked to develop short articles for middle
school students. The Honors classes learned about local
watersheds and related issues; children, asthma, and environmental
factors; and environmental education. They reported their knowledge
through informational writing, persuasive letters and editorials,
literary writing (including short stories, poetry, and monologues)
personal writing (narratives, memoirs, essays) and reviews. This format
brings new content knowledge to middle school students while modeling
writing genres that they are learning about.
