Movie Night that won't break the bank.

Tuesday, 11/3 @ 7:30pm - "The Fourth Kind" - SPECIAL FREE SCREENING!! An exclusive showing of the new movie in its entirety. Passes are required for admission, and can be obtained for free at SAC W310. Passes do not guarantee admission. Synopsis: Fact-based thriller involving an ongoing unsolved mystery in Alaska, where one town has seen an extraordinary number of unexplained disappearances during the past 40 years and there are accusations of a federal cover up.

Thursday, 11/5 @ 6pm & 8:30pm - "The Class" - FREE SCREENING!! Part of the French Cultural Exchange Film Series. In French with English subtitles. Synopsis: Teacher and novelist François Bégaudeau plays a version of himself as he negotiates a year with his racially mixed students from a tough Parisian neighborhood.

Saturday & Sunday 11/7 & 11/8 @ 6pm & 8:30pm - "Moon" - Astronaut Sam Bell has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish our planet's power problems.

Tuesday, 11/10 @ 6pm & 8:30pm - "The Grocer's Son" - FREE SCREENING!! Part of the French Cultural Exchange Film Series. In French with English subtitles. Synopsis: Antoine Sforza, a thirty-year-old young man, left his village ten years before in order to start a new life in the big city, but now that his father, a traveling grocer, is in hospital after a stroke, he more or less reluctantly accepts to come back to replace him in his daily rounds.

Thursday, 11/12 @ 6pm & 8:30pm - "Flight of the Red Balloon" - FREE SCREENING!! Part of the French Cultural Exchange Film Series. In French with English subtitles. Synopsis: A little boy and his baby-sitter inhabit the same imaginary world: through their adventures they are followed by a strange red balloon.

Saturday & Sunday 11/14 & 11/15 @ 6pm & 8:30pm - "Paper Heart" - Charlyne Yi embarks on a quest across America to make a documentary about the one subject she doesn't fully understand: Love.

HVP -- Honors Volunteer Program

HVP is an organization that seeks to give Honors Program students opportunities to volunteer for university-sponsored activities, and in the greater Louisville community. HVP hosts a monthly lunch meeting in Etscorn Honors Center to distribute information about each month’s activities. The first HVP meeting of the fall semester will be held in the Etscorn Honors Center Classroom, Nov. 5, 2009 from 12:15- 12:50 p.m. For more information or to be added to the HVP listserv please contact Katie Trimble at krtrim01@louisville.edu

Volunteer Opportunity

The Louisville Science Center is in need of volunteers for the Titanic Exhibit. The next training is Nov. 14, Sat, from 9-12. After training, the Center asks that you make a commitment in a 6 week period of either (3) four hour weekend shifts or (6) four hour shifts. Perks: free parking, IMAX and entrance to the Science Center.

Colloquium on Diversity

Dr. Fashaad Crawford, Faculty-In-Residence for the Cultural Center, will facilitate informal lunch colloquia and roundtable discussions at the University of Louisville Cultural Center the 2nd Wednesday of every month (12-1p.m.). Discussions are designed to provide cultural programming, discourse, and resources for faculty, instructors, staff, students, and administrators. The workshops will include teaching strategies, emerging trends in research, stimulating dialogue, and discussions on assessing diversity perceptions within the classroom and throughout campus. Free lunch is provided at every session.

Congrats Quiz Bowl Team!

The quiz bowl team swept both divisions at the first KCQRL tournament at the University of the Cumberlands. The DI team went 5-0 and defeated Georgetown, Murray State, Cumberlands, EKU, and Ohio University Southern. The DII team went 4-0 and defeated Georgetown, Big Sandy Community College, Henderson Community College, and JCC SW. The team will return to league action in November at Henderson CC, in addition to competing in tournaments at Ohio State and Michigan. D1 team members were Matt Ball, Austin Brownlow, Benjamin Stewart, and Torrence Williams. DII team members were Thomas Browning, Alex Clifton, Bobby Fiske,Ramapriya Rangaraju, Lauren Thomas, and Colton Wilson. New Full-Time MBA launches August 2010
The College of Business recently announced UofL's new Full-Time MBA program, which begins August 2010 and is an innovative, 13-month program perfect for recent graduates and professionals in transition. Students gain real-world experience at a part-time, paid internship while accelerated MBA courses are held three times per week. The Full-Time MBA adds to UofL's current MBA offerings that include the Professional MBA, offered in both an evening and Saturday format, and the nationally-ranked Entrepreneurship MBA.

MBA Information Session

The College of Business will be hosting an MBA information session for prospective students on Thursday, November 19 from 5:30-7 pm at the Papa John's Cardinal Stadium Press Lounge (Gate 6, 5th floor).  If you or someone you know may be interested in learning more about the MBA degrees we offer at the University of Louisville, please feel free to attend.

CODRE Research Grants

CODRE /Office of Research Diversity Grant For Undergraduate Students
The request for this funding initiative will be focused on support of UofL undergraduate student research that targets populations which are the focus of the commission – diverse, underserved, under-represented and/or vulnerable populations. Any student research project submitted for funding must have UofL faculty supervision and appropriate institutional approval. The student investigator must have completed his/her sophomore year or completed at least 60 credit hours as the University of Louisville at the time the application is submitted. The student need not be from a minority or diversity population.  Research projects can come from any discipline represented at U of L. It is recommended that all applicants for this grant review the UofL Commission on Diversity and Racial Equality web page for details about CODRE. Interested students who are experiencing difficulty in locating a mentor in their discipline may contact the CODRE Office (852-2029) for assistance.

Summer Medical and Dental Program

SMDEP is an innovative six-week summer academic enrichment program for college Freshmen & Sophomores. The focus in on integrated problem solving in the basic sciences & math, centered on medical & dental applications. Integrated coursework and clinical applications guaranteed to catapult students to a higher level of comprehension & competency. The application cycle runs November 1, 2009-March 1, 2010. Summer Study in the United Kingdom

The English Speaking Union (ESU) Summer Scholarship applications for study in Great Britain in the summer of 2010 are now available. The scholarship, open to juniors (junior status now with graduation no earlier than May 2010), provides tuition and room and board for one week in London followed by a three-week summer school program for studies in English literature, art history, creative writing, medieval studies, Shakespeare, history, politics and society at Oxford, Cambridge or Edinburgh for the summer of 2010. State Department Funded Study Abroad

The Critical Languages Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes (CLS) program provides fully-funded seven to ten week group-based intensive language instruction and extensive cultural enrichment experiences held overseas at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students. An application draft is due by Dec 15, 2009.  
The national deadline is Feb. 10, 2010.

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship is for juniors, or candidates not graduating before May 2010, seeking careers in fields related to public policy and public service -- including Law, Public Administration, Public Health, Social Work, Education and International Relations. This scholarship requires three years of work in this area after the completion of your education in return for the $30,000 graduate or professional school scholarship it provides.  Each university is allowed to nominate four candidates each year. Inclusion and Equity Internships

The College of Arts & Science Dean*s Office for International, Diversity and Outreach Programs is recruiting 5 interns. The purpose of the internship is to provide students with an opportunity to apply their education and passion for inclusion and equity to actual programming.

We are looking for motivated students with a passion for diversity and social justice. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.7 and be registered as a full-time student. Duties include, but are not limited to: participate in a monthly
dialogue regarding diversity and social justice issues; commit a minimum of two office hours each week; conceive and plan one program under the supervision of IDOP staff and provide assistance for undergraduate student programming. This is an unpaid internship.
