Message from the Chair

Chemistry at Louisville continues to build on its strong traditions. The members of our faculty are accomplished teacher-scholars who maintain exciting research programs in the myriad arenas that comprise the modern chemical sciences. This site will introduce you to our faculty and staff, our facilities, the courses we offer, as well as interdepartmental resources centered in this departent, IMD3 and CREAM.

Our undergraduate curriculum has been revised to reflect more "real-world" approaches to the science of chemistry. Our undergraduate teaching laboratories are coordinated by Dr. Mona Zady; Dr. Bill Richmond maintains their instrumentation. Our graduate program offers research opportunities in organic and inorganic synthesis, in theoretical and computational chemistry, in analytical chemistry including the development of micro- and nanoscale sensors, chemical catalysis, natural products research drug discovery and delivery, metabolomics, chemical biology and chemical physics.

The department occupies the three-story Chemistry Building, which houses faculty offices and laboratories as well as the undergraduate teaching laboratories. Recent growth in the department has led us to locate several research laboratories in the new Belknap Research Building. We have extensive research interactions with the Brown Cancer Center, particularly in structural biology, and metabolomics.

Our major research facilities under the direction of Dr. Mark Mashuta (Small Molecule and Macromolecular X-ray crystallography), Dr. Neal Stolowich (NMR) and Dr. Jim Jia (Mass Spectrometry) are quite good. Each year the Chemistry Graduate Student Association invites an outstanding chemist to the department and organizes events for the Distinguished Lecture Series, known informally as the Derby Lectures.
