W. M. Keck Foundation Research Program

Brief Synopsis from Sponsor: The Research Program seeks to benefit humanity by supporting projects in two specific areas (1) medical research and (2) science and engineering, that are distinctive and novel in their approach, question the prevailing paradigm, or have the potential to break open new territory in their field.  Projects deemed to be “High Risk” for NIH and NSF are highly encouraged.

November 4, 2021                     Internal concept paper due to RDSI

December 16, 2021                   Selected concept papers submitted to the Keck Foundation

January 1- February 15, 2022     Counseling calls with UofL leadership and the Keck Foundation

May 1, 2022                              Phase I invited proposals due

August 15, 2022                        Phase II invited proposal due

Sponsor Funding: Historically, grants range from $500,000 to $5 million, and are typically $2 million or less.  Projects that demonstrate other funding support is generally reviewed favorably.

Be aware: Applicants may submit one Phase I application online per grant cycle to each of the specific areas for which they are eligible. UofL will decide which to submit via internal review.

Anyone interested in submitting for this program must first submit an internal concept paper to , with copy to the applicable research dean, by 5 p.m. on the date listed above, including the following materials:

  • A single spaced one-page concept paper consisting of the following:
    • An overview of the proposed project emphasizing any unique aspects and pilot studies;
    • Emphasis for research- medical or science and engineering;
    • A brief description of the need for Keck Foundation support;
    • One or two sentence budget estimate.
  • Brief bio for all participants
  • A cover page that contains:
    • The name of this funding opportunity and title of your proposal;
    • Your name, position, and UofL office contact information;
    • Collaborator names, positions, and institutions (if applicable).

Reviewers will judge proposals as they would in any peer review process, so PIs are urged to put forward competitive internal proposals. Along with typical criteria, reviewers will evaluate internal proposals based on their fit with the sponsor’s articulated goals and criteria as well as the UofL strategic goals.
