Brief Synopsis from Sponsor: This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is being issued by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO). This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will advance the Biden Administration’s goal to achieve carbon pollution-free electricity by 2035 and to “deliver an equitable, clean energy future, and put the United States on a path to achieve net-zero emissions, economy-wide, by no later than 2050“ to the benefit of all Americans. To drive manufacturing innovation, spur job creation, and enhance manufacturing competitiveness, the Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) supports the development of innovative energy efficient and lower carbon-emitting manufacturing technologies and foundational, cross-cutting manufacturing processes, materials, and information technology critical to efficient and competitive domestic manufacturing. AMO’s goals include stimulating technology innovation, improving the energy productivity of U.S. manufacturing while reducing its carbon footprint, and enabling the manufacture of cutting-edge products in the United States.

The competitively selected projects from this FOA will focus on three main areas, with subtopics:

1) Manufacturing Process Innovation

  • a) Efficiency Improvements to Drying Processes
  • b) Advanced Tooling for Lightweight Automotive Components
  • c) Sustainable Chemistry Practices in Manufacturing

2) Advanced Materials Manufacturing

  • a) Materials for Harsh Service Conditions
  • b) Development of Aluminum-Cerium (Al-Ce) Alloys and Processing to Enable Increased Energy Efficiency in Aerospace Applications

3) Energy Systems

  • a) Structured Electrode Manufacturing for Lithium-ion Batteries

Sponsor Funding: Individual awards may vary between $500,000 and $4,000,000 depending on topic area.

Be aware: An entity may only submit one Concept Paper and one Full Application for each of the six subtopic areas (1a, 1b, 1c, 2a, 2b, 3a).UofL will decide which to submit via internal review.

Anyone interested in submitting for this program must first submit an internal application to , with copy to the applicable research dean, by 5 p.m. on the date listed above, including the following materials:

  • A summary of the proposal (maximum two pages);
  • A paragraph describing why you would be the most competitive candidate for this program;
  • Your current curriculum vitae;
  • A cover page that contains:
    • The name of this funding opportunity and title of your proposal;
    • Your name, position, and UofL office contact information;
    • Collaborator names, positions, and institutions (if applicable).

Reviewers will judge proposals as they would in any peer review process, so PIs are urged to put forward competitive internal proposals. Along with typical criteria, reviewers will evaluate internal proposals based on their fit with the sponsor’s articulated goals and criteria as well as the UofL strategic goals.
