Research Training Guide

Select your career stage:

Undergraduate

Every Undergraduate Student participating in research at U of L needs to:

1. Complete an Attestation and Disclosure Form (ADF) to fulfill the Conflict of Interest requirement

- to be completed once annually

To complete the Attestation and Disclosure Form, you will need to log in to iRIS, then fill out and successfully submit the form.

Please ensure you select “Involved in research” under your role(s) to complete the entire COI requirement for research. If you have any questions related to this requirement, please contact the COI Program.

DO NOT use Safari to complete any form in iRIS!

2. Complete RCR Training as Required

- to be completed once per career stage

The RCR Training Requirement is dependent on your funding source:

If you are funded by the NIH:

Complete BioC630

This course is offered during spring semester. Upon successful completion 15 contact hours are granted.

Students in the iPiBS program are currently required to take this course as part of their curriculum.

Other activities can POSSIBLY count toward completion of some of these NIH-required contact hours. These activities include but are not limited to:

Attendance of seminars/conferences directly related to the responsible conduct of research

Teaching or giving a seminar directly related to the responsible conduct of research

Poster presentations that you give directly related to the responsible conduct of research

If you feel like you have completed or attended something like the aforementioned, please contact our office and let us know so that we can determine eligibility as fulfillment of part of the 8 contact hour requirement. Contact

If you are funded by the NSF:

Complete the online Responsible Conduct of Research module at the CITI site.

Completion of this RCR module will fulfill the NSF's training requirement.

Other activities can POSSIBLY count toward completion of NSF-required training. These activities include but are not limited to:

Attendance of seminars/conferences directly related to the responsible conduct of research

Teaching or giving a seminar directly related to the responsible conduct of research

Poster presentations that you give directly related to the responsible conduct of research

If you are internally funded, or externally funded by an entity other than the NSF or NIH:

Are you using animals in your research?

You'll need to explore the Animal Protection requirements and possibly IACUC requirements as well.

Do you work directly with patients or their protected data?

You'll need to explore the Human Subjects Protection requirements.

Does your research involve any of the following?

  • Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Hazardous Waste
  • Basic Biosafety issues
  • Radiation - use or proximity
  • Formaldehyde
  • Recombinant DNA
  • Lasers
  • Respiratory Irritants
  • Select Agents
You will need to explore Environmental Health and Safety Training requirements and possibly Radiation Safety requirements as well.

Graduate Student

Every Graduate Student participating in research at U of L needs to:

If you are funded by the NIH:

  1. Complete BioC630: This course is offered during spring semester. Upon successful completion 15 contact hours are granted.

  2. Within anyNIH application (F Series fellowships, T Series, Career awards, etc.) it is imperative that the following be addressed:

    • a.Format – in class training required (face to face, interactive)

    • b.Faculty participation – addressing both mentors and other faculty involved in the project

    • c.Subject matter – RCR encompasses Conflicts of Interest, Human Subjects, Animal Use, Biosafety, Peer Review, Mentor/Mentee relationships, Collaboration, Authorship and Publications, Research Misconduct and Social Responsibility in Science and Research.

    • d.Duration – especially for F Series, Career Awards and T Series awards, a minimum of 8 hours, face to face, interactive instruction is required.

    • e.Frequency – must be completed at every career stage, no less than every for years while still on the NIH funding.
