In this McConnell Center lecture, Pomona College political science professor Susan McWilliams, PhD, will consider Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America" and how mobility affects the future of democracy in America. Tocqueville, a Frenchman, traveled deep into the Michigan backcountry during his visit to America in 1831-32. There he found people on the frontier headed west. He predicted that culture would eventually reach the Pacific and then turn around to destroy the civilization it had just built. What does the closing of the American frontier and the continuing mobility of the American people mean for democracy?
