Kentucky students who have completed at least one grade of high school by the summer are eligible to apply the McConnell Center's Young Leaders Academy. The summer residential leadership conference will be held June 17 to 20 at the University of Louisville. Applications are due April 15.

The conference focuses on "Revisiting American Constitutionalism" and is designed to help students further their understanding of U.S. history and political institutions while offering a taste of college life. Workshops will be led by faculty from UofL and area institutions and conducted at or near an entry-level college level. Topics will consider:

  • The origins of written constitutions
  • Federalist-Anti-Federalist debates
  • Disagreements about the proper role of government in modern America
  • Role of federal courts and political institutions in modern America
  • What changes and amendments students might advocate to change our foundational law

Each participant will receive a scholarship for the Young Leaders Academy that includes free lodging, meals and all conference materials.

“This will be a tremendous educational experience, but it is also a terrific opportunity for those who might be interested in being considered for McConnell Scholarships to attend the University of Louisville,” said Gary Gregg, McConnell Center director.
