Scholar combines service and scholarship in Cebu, Philippines
The junior McConnell Scholar is spending 11 days combining community service with her research about anti-bullying campaigns. She, along with five other justice administration students, is instructing students in four Cebu city schools about ways to help prevent and combat bullying. She is also assisting with a clinic hosted by the university's dental program.
Jenkins joins about 25 students from the university's education, communication and dental departments on the trip.
This marks Jenkins' first international trip. She said she wanted to broaden her travel experience before spending five weeks in the People's Republic of China next summer as part of the McConnell Scholars Program.
"I thought this would be an amazing opportunity to go out and see what other cultures are like," she said.
Jenkins and her cohort will return to Louisville on Dec. 19.
Last year, McConnell Scholar Boris Yelin participated in the International Service Learning Program trip to Cebu.
