About US Sen. Kelly Ayotte
Ayotte has been a leading voice in the Republican Party on national security and foreign affairs and an advocate for more fiscal responsibility in government.
Elected in 2010 to represent New Hampshire in the U.S. Senate, she won 60 percent of the vote in her first bid for public office. She is the only Republican in the state’s four-member congressional delegation and was mentioned as a possible running mate for GOP nominee Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.
She is a member of the Senate’s Armed Services, Budget, Commerce, Homeland Security and Government Affairs, and Aging committees and was appointed by U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell as counsel to the Senate Republican leader.
A Pennsylvania State University and Villanova University School of Law graduate, Ayotte worked as a law clerk for the New Hampshire Supreme Court before entering private practice. She was a prosecutor for the New Hampshire Department of Justice from 1998 to 2003, rising to become chief of its homicide unit. In 2004, she was appointed New Hampshire’s first female attorney general.
