McConnell Center presents KET's Renee Shaw with Mattingly Award
April 10, 2024 (Louisville, Ky.) – The McConnell Center recently recognized Renee Shaw as the 2023 recipient of the Chris Mattingly Award for Outstanding Community Leadership in Kentucky.
Shaw, the Director of Public Affairs and Moderator at KET and an award-winning journalist, was chosen by current McConnell Scholars and McConnell Scholar Alumni for her longtime service to Kentucky.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by this stellar group of Scholars who are committed to civic engagement and civil dialogue,” Shaw said. “In meeting so many of these future leaders of various backgrounds, I am more than confident that our Commonwealth will be in good hands.”
The Chris Mattingly Award for Outstanding Community Leadership in Kentucky, first presented in 1998, is given annually to an individual who reflects exceptional character and leadership benefitting the Commonwealth. The award was established to honor the memory of one of the first McConnell Scholars, Chris Mattingly. Mattingly, 21, died in a car accident on Nov. 1, 1996, while a student at the University of Louisville.
“I can’t imagine a more fitting recipient of the Mattingly Award,” said McConnell Center Director Dr. Gary Gregg. “She is a model of journalistic integrity and is an essential part of keeping Kentucky’s citizens informed and engaged.”
The award was presented to Shaw Saturday, April 6, 2024, at a McConnell Scholar Alumni Reunion event in Lexington, Ky. U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was in attendance for the presentation, which can be viewed on the McConnell Center Vimeo page.
Prior winners of the award include Kentucky Secretary of State Michael G. Adams, UofL History Professor Dr. Thomas Mackey, and Humana Co-Founder David Jones.
