The University Commission on the Status of Women announces the
Lilialyce Akers Travel/Research Awards
for the Study of Women & Global Issues
Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply for awards up to $1500 to facilitate the study of issues affecting women in the global south (newly democratizing countries; countries in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East). The awards are to be used to subsidize travel or expenses related to on-site research outside of the United States in 2018-2019. Research conducted in conjunction with a study abroad program is eligible for funding. Award recipients must complete all research by September 1, 2019. Upon returning from abroad, each recipient must provide a one-page written report on the results of research to the Commission on the Status of Women (COSW) and also give a public presentation at a COSW meeting. COSW and the Akers Scholarship should be listed as a funding source on acknowledgements for any future publications or presentations. All awards will be processed through the Financial Aid Office.

The deadline has been extended to Friday, December 14
To be eligible, students must not have previously won an Akers award and must:
- Be enrolled at UofL as a graduate or undergraduate student at the time of application;
- Complete an application form;
- Application should include a description, of no more than 1,000 words, of why and how you and the University Community will benefit from this scholarship. Budget of itemized costs should be included.
- Find a faculty sponsor who will complete the sponsor form and who will also provide academic guidance for the research including compliance with the U of L Human Subjects Research policy;
- Scholarship must be used for in the area of women and global issues.

The awardee will be notified by email by January 15, 2019 and invited to attend the COSW general meeting on January 25, 2019 to accept the award.
