2009-2010 Goals

  1. Implement a scorecard revision that reflects a concern for campus climate issues.
  2. Realize the COSW committee goals.
  3. Make progress on the 2009 Update recommendations.

Recruitment, Retention and Representation (DRAFT AS OF 11/30/09)

  • Develop effective mentoring for women faculty and staff. exploring best practices especially at our benchmarks.  In addition to Best Practices, in FY10, RRR will focus on mentoring of faculty members at the rank of Associate Professor to facilitate their promotion to the rank of Full Professor.
  • Annual tracking and update of the data published in the 2009 Update of 1994 Task Force Report on the Status of Women to allow us to assess progress toward goals.
  • Promote visibility and transparency of women's issues aligning our efforts with the recommendations of the 2009 Update of 1994 Task Force Report on the Status of Women

Campus Climate

  • Encourage the University of Louisville to partner with other state universities to alter the statute so that concealed deadly weapons are not allowed on college campuses.
  • Review the practice pertaining to sexual harassment incidents and how information is gathered, tracked, monitored and reported.  Work to establish mandatory sexual harassment prevention training for all new U of L students.
  • Review Code of Conduct from the Provost.
  • Update Campus Survey from 2000-2001 “Campus Survey Report:  Safety Perception and Experiences of Violence.
  • Work with the Office of Accountability and Institutional Research to construct an item to be added to the 2009-10 campus climate employee survey to assess employees’ experiences regarding use of leave time and its impact on workload.

Women and Global Issues

  • Inviting speakers of international renown who can address issues relating to the global economy, global social issues, and education of women and girls
  • Funding and sponsorship for groups or individuals who are planning forums on these issues
  • Supporting  scholarship on a variety of issues concerning women in a global perspective
  • Facilitating and promoting research opportunities for students related to women and global issues

Integration of Work and Family Committee

  • Support the ongoing development and progress of the Belknap Early Learning Campus (ELC) and Scholar House
  • Consult with the Dean of CEHD and the Director of the ELC and ELC Advisory Committee to identify 1-2 specific initiatives the COSW may help advance
  • Collaborate with the College of Education and Human Development (Haselton, Larson, Pentecost, Molfese and CEHD early childhood faculty) to support research at the ELC
  • Continue to advance the establishment of an on-site child care facility at the Health Sciences Campus
  • Monitor and advance the proposed changes to the leave policies and proposals for “stopping the tenure clock.”
  • Work with the Great Place to Work sub-committee to revise and institutionalize a policy that provides six weeks of paid parental leave for either parent of a newborn or newly adopted child.  Minimal compliance with FMLA shall not be considered sufficient.
  • Work with the Faculty Senate and within other appropriate university structures to:  a)  better publicize the availability of flexible personnel policies, consistent with The Redbook and Human Resources policies/procedures; b)  Work with academic and administrative units to adopt policies; and c) Monitor the application of policies consistently within academic and administrative units.
  • Collaborate with and support the “Great Places to Work” Advisory Committee to explore policies and outcomes for Faculty/Staff Housing, Dual Career program, Adoption Assistance, Personal Assistance Service, Elder Care, Work Life Program and Resource Center, and Recognition Pay.
  • Support compilation and completion of an annual report on this objective for submission to the Provost, detailing proposed family-friendly policies that are competitive to or exceed those at benchmark and aspirational universities.

Communication Committee

  • Update and vitalize COSW web site
  • Develop a communication plan for COSW – including getting the task force report publicity
  • Develop key message points for commissioners so we can keep university focused on our goals
  • Host a reception to discuss Task Force Report and our key goals for the year
  • Enhance COSW visibility & unity – lapel pins for commissioners, recognition at a game (lacrosse), social events
  • Send congratulation letters from COSW recognizing individuals for outstanding results
  • Conduct new member orientation
  • Broaden commission participation by potential future commissioners (web site  - Sherry Roark, communication plan – Kenny Brown & Cindy Hess)
  • Develop Sharepoint site for sharing and storing COSW documents
  • Participate on community outreach projects (joint responsibility with Work and Family)
