How to Plan a Stress-Free Holiday Menu: Expert Tips from UofL Conference Team
October 6, 2026
Elevate your holiday celebrations with elegantly set tables featuring rich festive accents, polished glassware and glowing seasonal centerpieces tailored for an unforgettable event.
The holiday season is one of the most exciting times of the year but planning a festive event - whether an intimate office gathering or a large corporate gala - comes with its fair share of pressure. The secret to a successful event almost always comes down to one element: the food.
To help you navigate holiday menu planning effortlessly, we sat down with our Catering Coordinator to gather insider advice on making your holiday event seamless and memorable.
Book Early and Secure Your Date
The holiday season is our busiest time of the year. Booking your event venue and caterer two to three months in advance ensures your preferred date and menu concept. Event venues and catering slots fill up quickly between November and January. Early planning gives you ample time to finalize guest counts, accommodate dietary needs and fine-tune your menu without last-minute stress.
Good news! We still have limited availability remaining for this holiday season, so reach out to us today at confer@louisville.edu or 502-852-0360.
Balance Season Flavors with Versatility
While traditional dishes like roasted turkey or festive hams are seasonal staples, incorporating variety keeps your menu dynamic:
- Interactive Food Stations: Charcuterie boards, carved roast stations, or festive dessert bars give guests a reason to mingle.
- Dietary-Friendly Options: Ensure vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices are explicitly marked and just as flavorful as the main entrees.
- Some popular vegetarian and vegan options that our catering partners offer include: Stuffed acorn squash with wild rice and cranberries, roasted butternut squash risotto and savory wild mushroom and thyme tartlets
- Some popular gluten-free options that our catering partners offer include: spice-rubbed beef tenderloin and herb-roasted winter root vegetables
- Seasonal Touches: Infuse autumn and winter flavors - think cranberry glazed meats, roasted root vegetables, and spiced winter beverages.
Match the Menu Style to Your Event Type
| Event Style | Best Menu Format | Catering Advantage |
| Cocktail Party | Passed Hors d’oeuvres and Small Plates | Maximizes networking and room flow |
| Formal Dinner | Plated Multi-Course Meal | Creates an elegant, structured experience |
| Casual Department Celebration | Gourmet Buffet and/or Food Station | Offers flexibility and a variety of choices |
Don't Forget the Presentation
A great holiday meal satisfies more than just taste - it creates a festive atmosphere. From warm lighting and themed serving displays to elegant floral arrangements, thoughtful presentation elevates the entire guest experience.
