We're hiring a 2018-19 Graduate Assistant!

The University of Louisville's A&S Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research (ABI) seeks a community engagement-oriented graduate assistant in any A&S discipline. Only students in the College of Arts and Sciences will be considered, but candidates may apply from any A&S discipline. All applicants must be full-time UofL students accepted into a degree-granting program for the full academic year, 2018-19 (fall and spring semesters).

Students seeking Masters or Doctoral degrees may apply and will receive equal consideration. Applicants are required to have earned above a 3.0 cumulative GPA during their undergraduate career or most recent full-time graduate semester. Priority will be given to candidates who share the Braden Institute's vision and values (see http://louisville.edu/braden/about/mission ), who have some background in or passion for social change and/or nonprofit work, and who have an interest in interdisciplinary research grounded in history. Some priority will also go to entering graduate students, but any A&S graduate student who meets the qualifications may apply.

The selected candidate can expect to work about 20 hours/weekly and should anticipate spending a significant amount of time working on transdisciplinary social justice research with a newly-formed research consortium in which the ABI is a lead partner. Applicants need to be available to begin GA responsibilities by or soon after August 1, 2018 and be able to continue these responsibilities through the last Friday in May, 2019. This 10-mo. assistantship will include tuition remission, health benefits, and a monthly stipend (amount depends on MA or PhD studies), and is renewable pending positive academic and workplace performance.

We seek the following in a GA:

  • Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills
  • Background or demonstrated interest in issues of social/racial justice and community engagement
  • Reliability, positive attitude, punctuality, ability to multi-task, friendliness, and enthusiasm for working collectively in a campus/community intergenerational team
  • All disciplines are welcome to apply, but preference will be given to students who a) are familiar with 20th century US social justice movement history and with social science research methods; and/or b) have a track record of community-based activism or research on issues of racial justice.

To apply, submit all of the following materials not later than April 13, 2018:

  • A two page Letter of Application describing your academic, community, and personal interests and qualifications for this position
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Contact info for two professional references
  • A writing sample of not more than 5 pages and a transcript of all undergraduate work, and all graduate work completed (if you did not receive your undergraduate degree and/or your graduate degree from University of Louisville)

Applications will be considered as soon as they are received in full and until the position is filled. All application materials should be addressed to and sent to:
