Volunteer Caregivers Program
Helping Those Who Help Others
Each year, thousands of men and women have the job of taking care of an older adult either by individual choice or as the result of deep love and compassion. The task of caring for a senior can often be a difficult, stressful, and isolating experience. The task is compounded when an elderly person suffers from irreversible memory loss (dementia) that can be caused by Alzheimer’s Disease and related disorders.
The Volunteer Caregivers Program is a dementia-specific, caregiver- focused program established to provide support services to caregivers and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.
A Legacy of Compassion
Since 1992, the Volunteer Caregivers Program has provided a free support system to families of persons with dementia. University of Louisville School of Nursing Professor, Dr. Karen Robinson created this program, based on her research and practice with persons with dementia and their caregivers. This research indicates that an organized support system makes a difference in the quality of life for the care giver and the impaired family member. As a caregiver enrolled in the program, not only will you benefit from research-based education, but your care giving experience will be part of Dr. Robinson’s ongoing research to help future caregivers.

Free, Personalized Assistance for Caregivers: Every Step of the Way
It is important for families and caregivers not to wait until a crisis develops when they are desperate for assistance. In order to participate in the Volunteer Caregivers Program, a physician must have diagnosed the person as having a disease causing irreversible memory loss. There is no charge for the support services. People of all income levels are welcome.
