ere is some information on the Indian filmmaker Pankaj Rishi Kumar, who will be visiting the University of Louisville on Tuesday, November 19. As  Pankaj will show and discuss his two latest films. They address gender, India, France, Shakespeare, caste, and postcolonialism:

Floyd Theater, 5:00 p.m. “Janani’s Juliette”

An intimate view of a theatre group as they rehearse a politically charged rendering of Romeo & Juliet, reworking it into the real-life matrix of caste, class and gender. As the brutal realities of everyday life, and of love across the lines of ‘honour’ in Tamil Nadu, are performed, they tear apart this classic tragedy.

Floyrd Theater, 6:45 p.m. “Two Flags”

Two Flags chronicles the life and politics of a quaint French town: Pondicherry (India)

As the 4600 Tamil French people gear up for the 2017 French Presidential Election, the film explores the idea of identity, citizenship and home in the postcolonial era.

Sponsored by the Department of Classical and Modern Languages, Institute for Intercultural Communication, Department of History, Commonwealth Center for Humanities and Society & the Asian Studies Program.
