House Speaker John Boehner to visit McConnell Center
John Boehner, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, will discuss jobs, the economy and the institution of the House Oct. 31 at the University of Louisville.
His public talk through the McConnell Center’s fall lecture series is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. on UofL’s Belknap Campus.
Tickets are required for the free talk and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. (Update: The event has been sold out and ticket requests are no longer being accepted.)
A Republican who represents Ohio’s 8th Congressional District, Boehner was first elected to House in 1990. His colleagues elected him as speaker in 2010. He previously served as House minority and majority leader.
As speaker, he has encouraged the open exchange of ideas, robust debate and fair voting practices in the House. He also has been central in ongoing efforts to address the nation’s budget deficit, maintaining that cutting government spending and removing barriers to private-sector job creation are key to economic growth.
He chaired the House Education and Workforce committee from 2001 to 2006, championing legislation to reform the nation’s 30-year-old pension laws and co-writing a bill that established the first private school choice program in the District of Columbia.
A 1968 graduate of Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Boehner worked several jobs to pay his way through Xavier University. After graduating in 1977, he went on to run a small business the north Cincinnati suburb of West Chester, where he and his family still live today.
