Patricia Benson

 

Patricia Benson is director of Get Healthy Now. An instructor of health and sport science classes at UofL for more than 10 years, she was tapped to head the faculty/staff health management program when it started in 2004. Patricia leads the program, sets its course and works to engage faculty and staff in healthy lifestyle choices. She brings to her role past experience as founder of her own fitness company, called "LifeStyle Wellness," as well as a passion for health, wellness and helping others. Patricia holds a Bachelor of Science degree in health promotion and a Master of Education degree in fitness and wellness. She earned both at UofL.

Program Coordinator: Farrah Spellman

Farrah Spellman serves as Get Healthy Now program coordinator. She joined the team in April 2006 as a fitness specialist and continues to bring a fresh, energetic approach to personal fitness for program participants. Farrah earned her degree in exercise science from Morehead State University, where she competed in NCAA Division I cross country and track. She is certified as a USA Track & Field level 1 coach and has American College Sports Medicine (ACSM) Personal Training certification. In addition to her work at UofL, Farrah also has been a fitness trainer at the YMCA and served as the assistant coach for the Manual High School's Girls and Boys State Cross Country/Track Championship teams in 2006 and 2007. Farrah is working on her Master of Education degree in health education at UofL. Her academic accomplishments and experience in health and wellness, combined with her dedication and enthusiasm to community healthcare, are the strengths that make her an asset to Get Healthy Now.

Wellness Coach Coordinator: Brooke Banet

Brooke Banet is the Get Healthy Now wellness coach coordinator.  In this role, she facilitates and coordinates one-on-one wellness coaching sessions for UofL faculty and staff. Brooke believes in focusing on the whole person and celebrating every success no matter the size. She brings this attitude to her work helping participants develop wellness goals and meet them. In addition to coaching, she also teaches such Get Healthy Now classes as the "Weigh to Go," a weight-loss program. A UofL graduate, Brooke holds a Bachelor of Science degree in health and human performance with a concentration in public health. She also has certification from Wellcoaches, an American College of Sports Medicine partnered corporation.  She is enrolled in UofL's Master of Education program for community health, with an expected graduation date of August 2010. In addition to her work with Get Healthy Now, Brooke also works with Paula Kommor, GHN program support and enhancement director, to authenticate the undergraduate student internship in wellness coaching.

Administrative Assistant: Erin Franklin

Erin Franklin is administrative assistant for Get Healthy Now. She joined the program in January 2007. As administrative assistant, Erin interacts not only with program participants and other UofL faculty and staff, but also with members of the larger Louisville community. She enjoys interacting with people and helping to meet their needs. Erin has a bachelor’s degree in communications from Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Ky.

Fitness Specialist: Kelly Smith

Kelly W. Smith joined the Get Healthy Now staff on a full-time basis in October 2008, bringing with her 10 years of experience in the health and wellness industry. She is one of the first people Get Healthy Now participants are likely to meet when they begin to use the on-campus fitness facilities. Kelly specializes in first workouts, nutritional coaching and health and fitness assessments, bringing to her work a passion to teach people how to be their best selves and to give them the tools to succeed. A graduate of Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass., Kelly holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. She also is certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and as an Advanced Healthy and Fitness Specialist by American Council on Exercise (ACE).  Before joining Get Healthy Now, Kelly had worked as the fitness coordinator for a family owned fitness facility and physical therapy clinic and as a contracted vendor supplying health and fitness programs to local companies.

Program Support & Enhancement: Paula Kommor

Paula Kommor is the program support and enhancement director for Get Healthy Now. She brings to the program her love of helping others and a wealth of professional and educational experiences. Paula teaches stress management techniques to program participants, facilitates wellness groups and provides one-on-one wellness coaching. In addition to her Get Healthy Now work, Paula created UofL's Wellness Coach Program in collaboration with Human Resources and the College of Education and Human Development. The program is part of the health and sport sciences curriculum. In it, students learn coaching techniques and then put them into practice helping faculty, staff and students. Paula holds a Master of Education degree in health promotions and counseling from UofL and is trained by the Harvard Mind/Body Medical Institute in cutting-edge stress management techniques. She also holds certificates as an AFAA group fitness instructor, ACE personal trainer, Wellcoaches wellness coach and Zumba instructor. Before coming to UofL, she created Dynamic Wellness LLC, a wellness company designed to help professionals more effectively manage their stress. She also presents "hands-on" keynotes and seminars on stress management.
