Report from the Report of the Faculty Senate Chair - April 6, 2010
Board of Trustees committees held meetings on March 4 and March 23. Most of the business conducted by the committees will be brought to a vote of the full BOT at the meeting scheduled for April 8, 2010, including an announcement about the Trustees Award winner and final approval of the School of Dentistry Certificate Programs that the senate approved in February 2010.
Since the last senate meeting, a small group of faculty has been working on reviewing the proposed changes to Redbook Section 4.4 which covers faculty grievance policies. The group consists of David Simpson, Enid Trucios-Haynes, David Willis, Saeed Jortani, Beth Boehm and Melissa Laning. The goal is to incorporate comments and reactions to the current draft as expressed in the senate XC and Redbook committees, and we should have a draft to share broadly by the end of the semester.
Senate elections will be held at the May meeting.
Report from Parking Advisory Minutes - April 2010
HSC-620 Garage
The contractors repaved Madison Street and an access gate will be installed which will only allow bus access. This shortens the shuttle route by approximately 4 minutes to a total of 10 minutes round trip. There is a passenger shelter being installed at the outside entrance to the garage.
Proposal for Shuttle between HSC and Belknap Campus
For several years, the Parking Office has been asked to provide a shuttle service between the two campuses since convenient parking on either campus is not readily available. Frequently, if an employee vacates a parking space, with the exception of Red reserved, it is very difficult to secure a convenient space upon his/her return. It is equally as difficult to secure a parking space on the campus the employee or student visits. The Parking Office periodically provides a shuttle from the HSC to Belknap for special functions.
The Parking Office has proposed to implement a program to provide shuttle service, a campus connector, between the Health Sciences Center and the Belknap Campus. The shuttle would operate Monday-Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Parking would operate either a 24-passenger or 32 passenger bus, whichever is available. The bus would make 2 trips per hour originating at the court yard on Preston Street and traveling to Belknap via I-65 stopping at the Student Activities Center. Again this is at the proposal stage and will go to Larry Owsley and the University Leadership for funding consideration.
Green Permit Parking on HSC.
The N. Preston lot was official closed which resulted in the loss of 70 green spaces. Communications were sent out to all individuals holding a permit for this specific lot. In the communication that was sent out all current permit holders were encouraged to exchange their current Green permit for the Magenta permit for the 620 HSC Garage. This was a cost cutting measure to better utilize the security force by consolidating them at the 620 garage and to save money for leasing that space.
HSC Request to Provide Shuttle Service to New Basketball Arena
There was a request to provide (for a fee) shuttle service from the Health Science Campus to the new Basketball facility downtown on game nights. Since there is limited parking downtown this was requested as a way to provide access for U of L employees and students. The analysis of this request revealed that there is difficulty in coming within 3 -5 blocks of the location (within a reasonable timeframe to offer round trip options) and this didn’t seem to be something that paying customers would find satisfying. This option is not going to be considered at this time.
