Minutes Update.
· November 2008 Minutes – Michael ben-Avraham moved to approve the minutes. The motion was seconded by Charles Sharp and approved after vote.
· December 2008 Minutes – Correction: Prafula Sheth was not present at the December meeting. Rhonda Buchanan made a motion to approve the December Minutes with noted correction. Her motion was seconded by Joan D’Antoni and approved after vote.
· January 2009 Minutes –Michael ben-Avraham moved to approve the minutes from the January 9 meeting. The motion was seconded by Linda Wilson and were approved after vote.
Hazel Coleman was scheduled to address the Commission but was unable to attend.
Chair’s Update.
Budget
· Vicki is a member of the Provost’s Advisory Board for Budgetary matters;
· We are looking at cuts of 2% or 4%; the cuts are not definite but we must be prepared. CODRE has had to put a halt on new funding;
· CODRE’s letter to the President was written as a result of President/Provost attending a CODRE meeting two months back (Vicki read the letter to the Commission).
· Her final comment addressed the fact that John Ralston was no longer on Commission. A letter was written to John thanking him for his commendable service on the Commission and was copied to the Vice President of Human Resources and University Provost. The letter was jointly signed by the Chair and Co-chair.
COSW Update. 2020 Plan – President Ramsey attended the COSW January 2009 meeting. He presented a Powerpoint Presentation to address the Commission’s concerns regarding the budget.
Diversity Programming Update. Robin Harris reported that the Diversity Programming Committee met on Monday, February 9. They engaged in spirited discussion regarding budget news. Robin reported that the Committee has received three requests for funding which are being held in the event that the Commission has money in its budget to support them. She will get back in touch with those who made the requests if we do find we have money.
· Robin Ochs’ events has also happened. Brian reported that the event was heavily attended and there was engaging conversation;
· Mark Priest, UofL Associate Professor of painting and drawing, Department of Fine Arts, Hite Art Institute presented “Underground Railroad Series - Harriet Tubman” on February 12 - 28, 2009. The opening reception for the exhibit was held in the Hite Gallery in Schneider Hall on the Belknap campus February 12, 2009 from 5:30 to 7:30pm.;
· Mary Ann Stenger reported that the Division of Humanities will present a free screening of “Constantine's Sword,” on Monday, Feb. 16, 7 p.m., in the Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library;
· The International Banquet is coming up;
· Linda Wilson gave an update on the status of the President’s Exemplary Multicultural Teaching Award—Nominations are due in by February 20, 2009. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to submit nominations. The actual celebration will be on April 20. Previous members of the award are Vicki (Hines-Martin), David (Owen) and Joan (D’Antoni);
· Discussion of events funded by CODRE and creating a summary of events that committees impact in the community;
o Transformation Tea: Will the tea still be funded by CODRE? After discussion it was agreed that it would be okay to fund the tea. There is a hold on ad hoc events until more is clear regarding the CODRE budget.
· Faculty and Staff Concerns: The F/S Concerns Committee met on February 26. Discussion involved staff grievance policies. At some point CODRE should have input into whatever document goes to the President. Other issues discussed were as follows:
o Salary equity concerns as they relate to minorities and women;
o Investigating “grow your own”;
o The lack of female administrators – contacting the COSW regarding their recent focus group findings for information that may be useful to CODRE. Contacting Bob Goldstein regarding statistics;
o Applications for CODRE grants. Including the University’s definition of Diversity that has been accepted and approved by CODRE;
o Linda will share CODRE EC concerns at the HRAC meeting. Some concerns CODRE has have been shared by others.
· Staff Concerns: Andrew is not present to give a report today. The Chair will have him write a report that can be disseminated to CODRE Commissioners via email.
· CET: The CET met last month. They are trying to pull together the assessment data in a central form.
o New survey ____, comprehensive of all groups.
o From time to time the University receives flyers from the KKK, primarily in the College of Education and SAC. In the past an alert was sent throughout the campus community. No alerts were sent the last time as they seem to promote hate speech. Diane and David are working on programs that will explore various racial groups that deal specifically with racial identity as related to Caucasian people. Discussions are in planning stages. David/Diane are seeking feedback from CODRE on topics, i.e., “what is white identity in an Obama era”. Other discussion developed regarding their proposals;
Announcements
“Underground Railroad Series - Harriet Tubman”. Mark Priest, UofL Associate Professor of painting and drawing, Department of Fine Arts, Hite Art Institute presents “Underground Railroad Series - Harriet Tubman” on February 12 - 28, 2009. The opening reception for the exhibit will be held in the Hite Gallery in Schneider Hall on the Belknap campus February 12, 2009 5:30 to 7:30pm.
NAACP. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the national NAACP, the NAACP at UofL will host a week of events that are open to the campus as well as community participants & spectators. Tonight, February 13, there will be a Freedom Fund Ball at 6:30-9:30 p.m. in the SAC’s Multipurpose Room. Tickets are required for this event.
Constantine's Sword . The Division of Humanities presents a free screening of “Constantine's Sword,” Monday, Feb. 16, 7 p.m., Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library. "Constantine's Sword," by Oscar-nominated documentarian Oren Jacoby, is an exploration of the dark side of Christianity, following acclaimed author and former priest James Carroll on a journey to confront his past and uncover the roots of religiously inspired violence and war. Part of the 11th annual Jewish Film Festival, this screening is free and open to the public.
“Let's Talk....About Love.” Wednesday, February 18 - 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., The Cultural Center. Our monthly luncheon discussion for February will focus on love. Is dating outside of the race still an issue in the 21st Century? Does the LGBT population experience the same relationship issues as heterosexuals? Is college the time for students to "sow their royal oats" or rather find someone in which to be equally yoked? What about May-December relationships? Food available at 11:30 until it's all gone, and the discussion begins at noon. Come talk, listen, be enlightened.
Farai Chideya. The College of Arts & Sciences Diversity Outreach department announces that Farai Chideya, whose presentation was postponed due to the recent ice storm, will speak at UofL on Wednesday, February 18 at 1:00 p.m. The event will be held in Chao Auditorium in the Ekstrom Library. Ms. Chideya currently hosts National Public Radio’s program News and Note.
Keynote Hispanic Presentation: Hispanic Lecture at the Louisville Conference on Literature and Culture since 1900 “La literatura puertorriqueña de cerca y de lejos: visión de los últimos 25 años” by Dr. Manuel Martínez-Maldonado, UofL Vice-President for Research, poet and novelist.

The Study of Women & Global Issues committee of COSW and the 2008 recipients of the Lilialyce Akers Travel/Research Awards Monday, February 23, 2009, from 3:00 - 4:00pm in Ekstrom Library, room 104. Light refreshments will be served. Lilialyce Akers Travel Award for the Study of Women and Global Issues is named in honor of Dr. Lilialyce Akers who served as UofL faculty for 30 years.

Taste of Diversity. The 3rd Annual Taste of Diversity will be on March 5th at 9-11:00 a.m. in Strickler Hall lobby. The event is free & open to public.
Career Fair. Career Fair presented on March 5th from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (All Majors) Student Activities Center; Also on March 6th - 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (Engineering Majors Only) Student Activities Center.
Diane Whitlock thanked CODRE for circulating BFSA information regarding scheduled viewing of the Presidential Inauguration. Also, the BFSA will host a reception in collaboration with Medical Students Organization on February 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the HSC’s Abell Building on the 2nd Floor.
