Adoption and Intersectionality: An Asian Adoptee’s Perspective

Presentation 2:20pm-2:50pm I Room B Told from the eyes of an international Asian adoptee, this workshop seeks to challenge the current positive narratives surrounding adoption. From falsified paperwork to corruption of the therapy industry, this discussion aims to bring the adoptee identity to relevancy in DEI spaces. By examining how the adoption system intersects with gender, class, and race, participants will be able to better understand the marginalization of adoptees from a greater global context. Listeners will be provided the language to critically think about present-day issues in relation to adoption and those impacted by it. |

Annabelle Vuong (King) is a Speed School alumnus with a background in Bioengineering and Public Health. Beyond her day job at UofL’s Office of Research of Innovation, Annabelle does work to promote visibility of issues within the AAPI community. Such work includes being the staff advisor to the Asian Pacific Student Union, presenting workshops across the country, and publishing papers relating to her personal identity as an Asian woman. Through her passion to share her culture in these ways, Annabelle hopes to continue to facilitate more inclusive discussions for all UofL community members.
