Elizabeth Cady Stanton Luncheon 2011
The Women’s Center sponsored its annual Elizabeth Cady Stanton Luncheon in November 2011 at the University Club. Guest speaker was Ms. Anna Holmes, writer, editor and creator of the popular web site Jezebel.com. See the details of the talk below.
Pictured below are Margaret “Meg” Hancock, Kavita Patel and Amanda Hobbs, 2011 recipients of the Dr. M. Celeste Nichols Award. All three plan to graduate in May 2011. They will use their award funds to do the following:
Margaret “Meg” G. Hancock, Educational Leadership & Organizational Development; Minor: Sports Administration
to travel at various universities (Ohio State University, Indiana University, and Western Ky. University) in December 2011-January 2012 to interview women and collect data on her dissertation. The purpose of the study is to explore career experiences and expectations of women in senior-level intercollegiate athletic administration; identify perceived career barriers and supports; and gain a better understanding of how the negotiation of barriers and supports influences career development, expectations, goals.
Kavita Patel, Medicine
for travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in the Capitol Hill Fellowship Program (February 2012 with Congressman Joe Crowley) to help in her understanding of the process of healthcare legislation. “The Capitol Hill Fellowship Program will introduce me to healthcare legislation, a peripheral concept affecting the everyday practice of medicine. The fellowship will complete my medical education by providing me with the opportunity to witness health care legislation in action.” As a Capitol Hill Fellow, she plans to play an active role in reforming laws that have major consequences on the future of medicine and she hopes to gain further appreciation for the intense effort involved in passing laws.
Amanda Denton Hobbs, Justice Administration
to attend and present a paper, “Immigration in the Bluegrass: Hispanic-Latino Attitudes, Knowledge and Fear of Law Enforcement.” at the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences’ Annual Meeting, March 2012, in New York City. The study concerns the impact of immigration legislation on Hispanic attitudes towards police in Louisville, Ky. Ms. Hobbs says, “The topic lacks attention in the criminal justice field, but is becoming more important with the increased introduction of immigration-based legislation.After graduation, she plans to pursue a career with the federal government.
