Abstract: Advances in electrochemical energy storage are needed for many applications including biomedical devices, portable electronics, and transportation etc. However, large scale electrochemical energy storage is needed in relation to the renewable energy generation and distribution of electricity. The specific needs of each application vary widely so that a single solution cannot meet the demands of all applications. In this presentation, first multi-walled carbon nanotube based lithium-CFx batteries for implantable medical applications will be considered. Next, the investigation of a new class of high-energy-density materials based on graphene and Sn nanowires for extending battery life of Li-ion batteries will be discussed. Finally new developments in Li-S batteries and supercapacitors will be introduced.
