About The Louisville Metro Area

Meteorologists All Over the Place:

The University of Louisville sits in the center of one of the densest populations of professional meteorologists in the world. The National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Forecast Office (WFO) in Louisville is just minutes away from campus, and affords students many volunteer internship and research opportunities. The United Parcel Service (UPS) has its global meteorology group based in Louisville, with a shadow program for students. There are four major TV-station meteorology groups based in Louisville (WAVE, WDRB, WHAS, WLKY), each with internship possibilities. The local NWS WSR-88D radar (LVX) and the Ft. Knox meteorology group are located a short 40 minute drive south of campus. And, Louisville has two airports, Louisville International at Standiford Field (SDF), home to the UPS Worldport and the Kentucky Air National Guard's 123rd Airlift Wing, and the public airport at Bowman Field (LOU).

Excerpt From The Department Of Admissions:

Louisville offers fun, variety, and location. Located on the scenic Ohio River, Louisville is the largest city in the state with about one million people in the metro area. The weather in the summer can climb well past the eighty degree mark, but the winters are mild, and the spring and fall offer a time to go outdoors and enjoy the spectacular sights. There is never a lack of anything to do in the "River City," because Louisville knows how to party. On any given weekend it's easy to find things to do and see that don't cost much: international festivals, art fairs, neighborhood festivals, flea markets, outdoor concerts, museums, historical landmarks, events at the new Waterfront Park and much more. Tying It All Together: Why Atmospheric Physics at UofL?

There are several universities across the U.S. with Atmospheric Science programs, but many cannot beat the Louisville area's various and ever-changing climate patterns. Louisville has seen snow on the ground one day - and 70 degrees the next... hurricane force winds... ice storm damage... major tornado outbreaks... along with everything in between. The rich weather history of Louisville makes UofL a perfect place to study atmospheric physics, climat, and space weather.
