Insight Into Diversity Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award Recipient
The INSIGHT Into Diversity Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award recognizes colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.
“UofL is a visionary leader among institutions of higher education striving for inclusive excellence throughout their campus,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “As a Diversity Champion school, UofL exceeds everyday expectations by developing successful strategies and programs that serve as models of excellence for other higher education institutions.”
Insight Into Diversity Diversity Champion Award
Diversity Champions exemplify an unyielding commitment to diversity and inclusion throughout their campus communities, across academic programs, and at the highest administrative levels. Known for visionary leadership, Diversity Champions are institutions that set the standard for thousands of other campus communities striving for diversity and inclusion. They develop successful strategies and programs, which then serve as models of excellence for other institutions. Diversity Champion schools exceed everyday expectations, often eclipsing their own goals.
Campus Pride "Best of the Best"
Campus Pride chose the thirty campuses this year based on their overall ratings on the Campus Pride Index and specific LGBTQ-inclusive benchmark measures. In order to be in the “Best of the Best” listing, an institution had to score the highest percentages in the LGBTQ-friendly benchmarks for policies, programs and practices.
UofL earned five out of five stars from the Campus Pride Index, a national nonprofit organization that rates colleges and universities according to their support of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues.

From the nomination: "The DEI unit are leaders without comparison at this University. At a time when everyone must stop, step back, and let the DEI unit lead, they have often been spotlighted only as a way to hold of examples of anti-racist work by the University instead of being centered as the leaders and experts in this work that they are. Despite this, the DEI unit has stayed the course of their Noble Purpose and have stood up and pushed back and led to try to make a difference in this campus and community. Even when they receive messages that their policy recommendations, messages, or trainings are "too much" or "not realistic" or "dont play nice enough" the DEI unit continues to speak-up and out to try to make the action that is so needed take place. Oftentimes, speaking out in this way can feel it is at risk of losing the support and employment because these are the hard messages and truths we all must face to truly be anti-racist. And through this all, this group is as negatively impacted by what's happening in the state and country at large as anyone, if not more, and continue to speak out and lead. As we move forward this group will most likely continue to be instrumental in the leadership of the CARA as the agenda must move from a dream into realities. Its important to start recognizing this teams leadership and as a phenomenal example of the Cardinal Principles in everyway."
