Student Academic Progress Policy for Federal Financial Aid

Federal Regulation HEA 484(c)

Dental School students are considered to be making Satisfactory Academic Progress and are eligible to receive federal financial aid as long as they are continuously enrolled.   All dental students are monitored by the Associate Dean for Pre-doctoral Education on both qualitative and quantitative measures.  Students are reviewed for:   failures, repeat of courses/and or academic year, and if they exceed the 6-year rule for completing their degree.  Students who fail to meet the Dental School standards may appear before the Student Progress and Promotions Committee to determine their academic future.  This is an advisory committee to the dean, who makes the final decision.  The student’s academic records are evaluated based on the failure and a decision is made whether to hold a performance evaluation hearing.

Students who fail to meet the Dental School standards will be considered not to be making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and will be ineligible for federal financial aid.  However, if the dean allows the student to continue and/or return to school, he will be place on an academic plan outlining what he/she must do to remain in school. He/she will be considered to be on financial aid probation and will be eligible to receive federal financial aid as long as he/she meets the conditions of the plan.

If this final decision is made after the beginning of a new semester, all financial aid will be on placed on hold until the decision is approved.

The Financial Aid Office will be notified of any students who fail to meet the Dental School standards and the Dean’s decision in each case. Students’ aid for the next semester will be placed on hold until the Dean’s decision is rendered.
