Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry
The BA degree in chemistry is designed for students who want a more general education than is possible in the BS curriculum, while at the same time receiving a substantial background in chemistry. For several related fields, this program offers a broad pre-professional education.
Bachelor of Science in Chemistry
The BS in Chemistry degree program is designed to prepare professional chemists for industrial, governmental, academic, and research positions. This curriculum meets approved requirements for professional training. Students completing the BS in Chemistry may pursue one of these tracks:
- Bachelor of Science in Chemistry - Standard Degree Track
- Bachelor of Science in Chemistry - Biochemistry Concentration
- Bachelor of Science in Chemistry - Business Concentration
The BS in Biochemistry degree program is designed to provide an interdisciplinary curriculum in chemistry and biology and prepare students for careers in biochemistry and biotechnology and postgraduate education, including medical school, dental school, pharmacy school, graduate school, and other health- and bio-related fields.
Departmental Scholarships
The Tilford F. and Vicki Riehl Endowed Chemistry Scholarship provides up to $6000 in scholarship to a full-time undergraduate rising junior or senior student enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences that is pursuing a traditional BS degree in the Department of Chemistry. The recipient's intention should be to follow Chemistry as their career path of choice. The student must be a US citizen with demonstrated financial need and scholastic merit. Preference is given to students who graduated from a high school in the Louisville area, including the Kentucky counties of Bullitt, Henry, Jefferson, Meade, Oldham, Shelby and Trimble and the Indiana counties of Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Scott, and Washington.
The Kenneth E. Moreland Endowed Scholarship Fund provides up to $1500 in scholarship to a full-time undergraduate student that is a rising junior – senior in the Department of Chemistry. Selection is based on demonstrated financial need and scholastic merit. Preference is given to students who are from the Louisville Metro area followed by those from anywhere in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The scholarship is named in memory of Kenneth E. Moreland, who received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Chemistry from the University of Louisville in 1948 and 1949, respectively. He used his chemistry training extensively throughout a long career that included working as a chemical engineer in the US Army and in the CIA.
The Commander Martha S. Lyon Endowed Scholarship Fund in Chemistry provides up to $1200 in scholarship to a declared major in chemistry that is in good academic standing. It is the Donor's strong preference that the award be given to women to encourage greater representation in the field of chemistry in accordance with affirmative action goals of the University of Louisville.

The Rachel Davis Memorial Scholarship is for full-time students majoring in biology, chemistry, geology, microbiology, or physics with financial need. Apply here. Due April 1st each year.
