Residence Hall Staff
Your Resident Assistant is:
- A Community Builder
Helping students make connections to their floor, residence hall and the rest of the campus community is essential to the RA’s role as an agent for the development of the community. The goal is to respond to the needs and interests of all students on the floor and to enrich the learning experience. He or she is available to help you implement your ideas. - A Listener, Adviser, and Information Source
RAs know of available resources in order to make appropriate referrals when helping residents adjust to the University environment. To do this the RA maintains contact with all students on the floor, is perceptive and helpful concerning student needs and potential conflicts. Contact your RA if you need help. - A Communicator
RAs are responsible for communication with the resident director and the Housing and Residence Life Office about students’ concerns on their floors. In addition, they are responsible for communicating important residence hall and University activities and information to the students on their floors. At times, RAs are also responsible for assisting in operational housing procedures and discipline. - undergraduate or graduate student

Residence Life Coordinator

Resident Directors

- trained and experienced in residence hall operations
- counsel and advise
- supervise resident assistants, desk assistants and advise hall council
- facilitate community building
- feel free to speak with your RD about problems, ideas, and suggestions
Apartment Managers
- trained in apartment operations
- graduate students
- counsel and advise
- supervise Assistant Managers
- coordinate resident appreciation events and tenants’ meetings
- feel free to speak to the AM about questions, problems, and suggestions
Assistant Managers
- full-time students
- provide assistance and serve as emergency contacts for apartment residents
- preference given to those 19 or older, graduate students or students with families
- minimum 2.3 GPA required
Desk Assistants
- serve as receptionists and security
- assist residents and guests
- knowledgeable in hall and campus information
- enforce policies
- monitor building traffic
- building desks staffed approximately 24 hours a day
FY Guides
- Serve as mentors to first-year students
- Serve as guides to university services, resources and events
- Undergraduate residents
- Selected based on leadership and UofL knowledge
- Minimum 2.5 GPA required.
Administrative Assistants
- part-time student staff
- assist in central Housing office
- provide customer service
- answer phones and other administrative tasks
Summer Conference Staff
- part-time student staff
- check-in and out conference groups
- monitor front desk
- rotate on call for emergencies
- option to live on or off campus
Facility Assistants
- part-time student staff
- complete minor repairs and moving projects in the halls
- monitor Housing Hotline and report all requests made
RATS
- part-time student staff
- monitor HEAT system
- assist residents whose computers have virus and connection issues
- maintain housing staff computers
- create technology related programming
Other Privately Contracted and University Staff in the Halls
(all these staff will be in uniform and wearing nametags, if you are ever concerned contact Housing at 852-6636 or your front desk)
Front Desk Security Service
- privately contracted
- covers all desks (not all desks in the Complex are covered) from midnight to 8am daily
- maintain hall safety and security
- enforce policies, including guest sign in
Laundry and Vending Machine Staff
- private contracts
- repair reported problems
- restock
Custodians
- weekday cleaning of hall restrooms, vacuuming, emptying trash and other jobs as needed to keep up the appearance of the hall
- 24-hour on call for emergencies
- all halls are cleaned by a private company
- see your RA or RD about problems regarding cleaning of your hall
Zone Maintenance
- university staff assigned to campus buildings
- address day to day repair and replacement
- assigned tasks through Housing and Physical Plant
- report all needs to maintenance hotline (852-1641), not to the maintenance staff
- will enter rooms when residents are not present
Department of Public Safety
- trained police officers
- do periodic visits to residence halls
- respond to emergencies in and around the buildings
- do drug sweeps with trained drug dog
- assist with keys locked in car, running out of gas and battery jumps
