Madeleine Loney

Senior Madeleine Loney has received a Critical Language Scholarship to study at Noor Majan Training Institute in Ibri, Oman. She will receive a year’s worth of Arabic instruction condensed into one summer, then spend a year at Qatar University in Doha, where she will hone her mastery of Arabic and take part in literature classes with native speakers.

The Critical Language Scholarship is an overseas language and cultural immersion program for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students. The fully-funded scholarship aims to expand the number of U.S. residents proficient in critical languages while building relationships between people in the United States and other countries.

Loney is studying at Qatar University through the school’s Arabic for Non-Native Speakers Scholarship.

“I am so grateful to participate in these programs, both the Critical Language Scholarship and the Qatar University Arabic for Non-Native Speakers Scholarship. A year and a half of immersive, intensive study will doubtlessly increase my speaking, reading and writing abilities in Arabic.”
