Basic Rodent Biomethodology

Policy Info: Effective January 2, 2024, all personnel responsible for handling rodents (Mice and/or Rats) will be required to complete the Basic Rodent Biomethology Course with a CMRU veterinarian or designated veterinary staff, or by scheduling observation of procedures performed within the laboratory or procedure room by CMRU veterinarian (or designated veterinary staff). The Comparative Medicine Research Unit (CMRU) offers basic rodent biomethodology training for investigators and laboratory personnel on a bi-monthly basis with mice and rats. The training is intended to develop and/or hone techniques for new or established personnel at any level. The training lasts approximately 2 hours. 

This training consists of standard rodent techniques: appropriate animal handling, restraint, blood collection (lateral saphenous and tail vein), injection techniques (subcutaneous, intravenous, intraperitoneal), oral gavage, ear tagging, ear notching, and euthanasia.

NOTE:

In an effort to provide maximal benefit and application of rodent biomethodology techniques, the number of participants is limited to four people. Therefore participants are required to complete a Reservation Request Form.  Be advised that classes fill up very quickly so submit your request form as soon as possible. Individuals must complete occupational health and safety enrollment (1.) "Occ. Health..." CITI course and 2.) the health survey) and be an approved project participant on an IACUC Proposal or have an add/remove participant form submitted in iRIS before attending this course.
