Founded in 1972, The University of Louisville Dance Academy is the official school of the University of Louisville Dance Theatre. The focus at UofL is on serious ballet training in an academy setting.
Alumni from the UofL Dance Academy have danced, or are presently dancing, in companies throughout the country and Canada, including the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, the National Ballet of Canada, and the Louisville Ballet.
Students from the Academy have been invited to study at the School of American Ballet (school for the New York City Ballet), the School for the San Francisco Ballet, the Joffrey Ballet School, the Pacific-Northwest Ballet School, the school for the Pennsylvania Ballet, and the Aspen Ballet Academy for the summers.
Numerous performing opportunities exist for the dancers at the UofL Dance Academy, including the school's Lecture-Demonstration in March, which showcases the training of students from all levels in the school, and the Spring Gala for the most advanced students who perform as the University of Louisville Ballet Theatre. We also have a good many students who will not be professional dancers yet who have found in their ballet training a training for life as well. We are equally proud of the many highly capable citizens associated with our school. Many of our students are excellent honor roll academic students as well. All in all, the audience of tomorrow.
The enrollment increased during our nine-week summer semester including dancers from many local schools who choose to train more seriously during the summer, and also several students from out of state who visited specifically to dance at UofL. The Fall and Spring semesters are 16 weeks each, and train about 250 students from the 4-year-old pre-ballet creative movement student, the elementary age student taking one to three classes weekly, the older pre-professional student who is performing through high school and even college, to the adult student who chooses to take ballet classes either for the first time or as a way to keep up the previous training.
The UofL Dance Academy is a member of the Youth Arts Council, Fund for the Arts; and as a member group performed in the Kentucky Center for the Arts for the 10th Anniversary Celebration as well as on Youth Arts Days in Fall. The Dance Academy also attends the Southeast Regional Ballet Association Festivals, Regional Dance America.
