Julia W. Purcell
Julia W. Purcell, MT-BC, has taught Improvisation for Music Therapy since 2008. She received her music therapy degree from Michigan State University. During her internship training in New York State, she was trained by teachers who were certified in Nordoff-& Robbin’s Creative Music Therapy. She uses her knowledge of improvisation and her belief in the humanistic philosophy to inform her teaching and her clinical work. She is co-owner of Louisville Expressive Therapies, LLC and provides group and individual music therapy for children and adults in the greater Louisville community. In addition to her clinical work, she provides clinical supervision to University of Louisville Music Therapy students during their practicum placements. In 2011 Julia became a certified Music Together teacher and teaches early childhood parent/child music classes at Shine. In 2012 she was invited teach music at Friends School, a non-profit school serving children with and without special needs. At the school she has the pleasure of working with a diverse group of kids ranging from preschool age up to eighth grade. Julia is a member of the American Music Therapy Association and the Kentucky Music Therapy Association. She is the proud mother of one daughter. In her spare time she teaches private guitar and banjo lessons and plays in the old-time string band Maiden Radio.
