A Letter from David Updegraff:
I had the good fortune to start my music studies at Gardencourt in the U of L School of Music Preparatory Dept. I started piano lessons with Doris Owen Bickel in 1955, and enjoyed the lessons greatly. Later on, around 1966, I remember becoming inspired and encouraged by Peter McHugh again in the same preparatory program. My lessons were in the building that was the library on the Gardencourt campus. I am certain that were it not for Peter McHugh's charisma and encouragement I would not have sought a career in music. I became excited enough that I continued in the U of L School of Music for my undergraduate studies and benefited greatly.
In 1978 I had the pleasure of returning to Louisville to teach at U of L for five years. From there I went to teach at Western Michigan University. I came to The Cleveland Institute of Music in 1987 and have been Head of the Violin Department here since 1988.
Certainly, none of this would have occurred without my early years in the U of L Preparatory Department.
Sincerely yours,
David Updegraff

Classes are taught on the Belknap Campus at the University of Louisville School of Music. The School's primary location is First Street at Cardinal Boulevard. Our satellite location, Oldham County Fine Arts Center, 7105 Floydsburg Road in Crestwood, offers private lessons. Call Dr. Vernon Cherrix (502-852-3136) for additional information on programs at this location.
Saturdays, you may park in the lots directly next to the School of Music at no charge. Paid parking is available at several places. After 4:30 p.m., you may pay $3.00 and park in the visitors lot across the street. The Speed Museum garage is available (on either side of the circular driveway out front). Parking meters are available on Cardinal Boulevard. Many people use the 15-minute meters for quick drop off and pick up of students. The visitor lot will accommodate quick drop offs only a couple of times each semester. Do not block traffic or park in front of the Planetarium. If you are stopped in the loading zone, you must have flashers on.
Note: Since we are on the edge of campus, on weekdays it may be easiest before 5:00 p.m. to find a spot on one of the surrounding streets or even in the lot at Manual High School after school hours.
