Welcome to University of Louisville Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program!
Our program began in 2004 and resulted from the collaborative efforts of professionals at numerous training sites within our community. Our Palliative Care Program at University of Louisville enjoys a well-integrated status with exceptional institutional support. We offer a unique educational opportunity because of the variety of patients and settings available to our fellows.
Because of our diversity, we can cater a fellowship experience to the individual fellow’s needs. For those interested in Palliative Medicine, we have inpatient experiences at the following sites: University Hospital, a Level One Trauma Center for our region and home to the Brown Cancer Center Supportive Care Clinic; Jewish Hospital, a transplant center, rich in ICU exposure; the VA Medical Center, home to our outpatient Palliative Care Clinic; and Kosair Children’s Hospital. In addition to the Palliative Medicine rotations, we have learning opportunities with our local Hospice that allow the development of skills needed for medical directorship. Fellows rotate at a free-standing Inpatient Care Center, in the homes of our community and VA patients, with the Hospice Medical Director in his administrative capacities, and with non-physician professionals in their areas of expertise, such as grief and bereavement.
In addition to the vast network of Hospice and Palliative Care sites, one of our greatest strengths is our interdisciplinary learning approach. Our weekly conferences are frequently combined with the Department of Geriatrics, and professionals from every discipline join us for dynamic, interactive learning sessions. We include physicians, pharmacists, bioethicists, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and psychologists in our conferences, and students from all of these disciplines rotate through our training sites. We also enjoy the company of fellows and residents from specialties including Medical Oncology, Pain, Psychiatry, Neurology, and Internal Medicine.
For those unfamiliar with our mid-sized city, Louisville boasts Midwestern attitude and Southern charm. We enjoy affordable living, short commutes, and access to other large cities within a few hours’ drive. Louisville also has a thriving arts community and excellent restaurants. We hope that you will take some time to explore our web site and learn more about us.
