Residents in Business

Residents in Business

Residents in Business was piloted in June 2013. It precedes residents’ final year. It covers topics such as analyzing a contract for employment, reading a balance sheet from a practice or hospital, preparing your CV, and making personal financial decisions.

U of L SOM strives to instruct residents in all specialties in the fundamental principles of the business of medicine and leadership necessary to succeed as physicians, physician executives, administrators, and academicians. All residents about to enter their final year are enrolled in a mandatory 12-module online course and attend a face-to-face full day workshop including brief didactics, panel discussions, scenario based exercises, and Q and A. Contract negotiation role play is a popular exercise and the Residents' Job Fair is included in the day.

U of L has partnered with the Greater Louisville Medical Society, a local bank, and several other financial service providers to integrate locally relevant content. The online course, BeyondtheExamRoom.com, and face-to-face workshops are educational tools developed by OPM, a not-for-profit physician education group specializing in business training.
