Fostering a Community of Critical Thinking and Action
The i2a Institute, now in its sixth year, is designed for faculty and staff to connect with campus colleagues, engage with a national expert, and share scholarly projects that illuminate how we foster and assess students’ critical thinking skills “in action” both in and outside the classroom. Join us for one, two or all three days of this engaging conference that brings together colleagues and students from across campus and the country to advance our shared mission to foster a community of critical thinking and action.

Day 1: Monday, May 19
For those individuals returning to the i2a Institute, this day is an opportunity to review the core concepts of teaching for critical thinking. For those new to the Institute, this day is a useful entry point into the i2a conversation on critical thinking and the Paul-Elder framework.
Day 2: Tuesday, May 20
The second day of the i2a Institute will begin with Dr. Gerald Nosich’s brand new session on the seven polarities of critical thinking that guide us in thinking about this question: how do I best promote critical thinking in my own discipline or teaching context?
This morning session will also feature faculty from four units at UofL giving an overview of their i2a progress to date and sharing specifics practices that others can implement in their own i2a work within departments or programs. In the afternoon, Institute participants will choose from hands-on workshops led by faculty sharing their best practices and i2a innovations that can be adapted for a variety of classroom contexts.
Day 3: Wednesday, May 21
The third day of the Institute will revive last year’s popular student panel with new student voices and perspective on the i2a experience. This is followed by the i2a Showcase in which faculty, staff and students come together to show off their i2a best practices, research and projects through short, structured presentations.
The afternoon will feature a fast-paced panel session with five faculty members from across UofL delivering a dynamic, media-rich presentation focusing on one way they infuse i2a concepts into their own teaching and learning practices. The Institute concludes with a brand new Collaborate & Connect Session, providing a unique opportunity to network with colleagues to explore potential collaborations, and discover “what’s next” on your i2a journey.
Who Should Attend?
- Full and part-time faculty and staff who are interested in infusing critical thinking innovations and related assessment strategies into their instruction
- Administrators and staff in higher education who want to learn more about infusing and assessing critical thinking into curricular, co-curricular, and student service projects and programs
- Other educators interested in learning more about the teaching and learning of critical thinking
Registration cost for non-UofL affiliates is:
$125 per day
$300 for all 3 days
Group rate for 3 days: $250 per person for groups of 4 or more from the same school/university

- Registering for one, two or three days of the Institute is free for UofL faculty and staff.
- Beverages, light snacks, and a buffet lunch are included for participants as part of each day.
