Description: This workshop will introduce you to core concepts for teaching critical thinking and guide you in infusing these concepts into your teaching activities and disciplinary context. Using the scholarship of Dr. Gerald Nosich to guide us, we will explore critical thinking not as something additional to content, but rather as skills, insights, and values integral to understanding and internalizing content. Through a series of interactive exercises, you will examine and articulate the fundamental concepts and central questions that “live inside” your courses and assignments, but often seem elusive to students. You will practice thinking about your teaching activities as avenues for deepening students’ ability to work with disciplinary concepts, to engage in original inquiry, and to think critically. Bring a course syllabus to work with during the workshop.
Objectives:
- Explore concepts and definitions of critical thinking
- Examine
and articulate the fundamental concepts and central questions that
“live inside” your courses and assignments, but often seem elusive to
students
- Revise or revisit your teaching activities to more effectively engage students in original inquiry, and to think critically
