i2a Introduction

Ideas to Action (i2a) is a multi-year effort supported by the Provost to promote meaningful transformation of our undergraduate programs. The i2a initiative grew out of our commitment to fulfilling accreditation requires set out by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools-Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC). It requires member institutions to develop a practical, university-wide quality enhancement plan (QEP) to improve student learning. The U of L plan, i2a, will sharpen our existing focus on building undergraduate students' critical thinking skills, starting in the general education program and continuing through undergraduate major courses. Students will be required to demonstrate their critical-thinking skills in a culminating experience, such as a thesis, service-learning project, internship or capstone project.

Programs and workshops are available to individual faculty, staff and departments who wish to engage in learning more about i2a and integrating its central themes—critical thinking, “real world” application, community-based learning and culminating experiences—into their work.

During the 2009-2010 academic year, the i2a Task Group is inviting applications for its i2a SUN Grants. This small-scale funding program is designed to give faculty, staff or teams of faculty and staff grants of up to $5,000 to develop, implement and assess projects that will directly and significantly support the sustained incorporation of selected i2a outcomes into undergraduate programs and courses.

Up to ten (10) i2a SUN Grants will be awarded during the 2009-2010 year and will be dispersed to the unit/department of individuals whose successful proposals fall into one or more of the grant categories. Budgets, support letters and final reports are part of the requirements of this new internal funding program.

This is an internal grant program with guidelines established by the i2a Task Group and subject to University protocols. The following grant guidelines and instructions are for the initial 2010 funding cycle. For questions about the i2a SUN Grants contact Dr. Cathy Bays, i2a Specialist for Assessment, at 852-5105 or cathy.bays@louisville.edu

The following describe in detail the outcomes for i2a SUN Grants and the application guidelines. The i2a SUN Grants are divided into 4 categories with 2 funding cycles for the November 2, 2009 application deadline.

Selection Process and Funding Priorities

All completed applications will be reviewed by a cross-disciplinary committee made up of members of the i2a Task Group. Reviewers will use the criteria listed on the i2a SUN Grant rubric to evaluate proposals and make funding decisions.
