Studies indicate gum disease is associated with ailments throughout the body ranging from heart disease to diabetes. We know nutrition and oral health have a two-way relationship: poor nutrition promotes oral diseases and poor oral health can adversely affect nutrition. In an effort to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining oral health as an integral part of overall health, the University of Louisville School of Dentistry will join with community organizations and businesses in a one day event.

UofL dentists will provide free oral health education and screenings to check for signs of oral cancer and tooth decay. Walgreens will offer blood pressure screenings, diabetes testing and shingles vaccinations. HIV testing will be available through the Volunteers of America, and Legal Aid Society representatives will talk with those who may need legal counsel.

Emotional health also is an important component of overall health, and stress reduction techniques will be emphasized. The House of Ruth will offer a clay pottery craft for those interested in art therapy.

A healthful lunch will be provided to everyone who attends - registration is encouraged by calling 502-224-1917.
