Alan Farman BDS, PhD, DSc
Dr. Allan G. Farman, BDS, LDSRCS, PhD (Oral Pathology), EdS, MBA, DSc (Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology), Diplomate American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, is Professor of Radiology and Imaging Science in the Department of Surgical and Hospital Dentistry at The University of Louisville School of Dentistry. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology as well as Clinical Professor of Diagnostic Radiology in the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He is a Honored Guest Professor of Peking University, Beijing, China, and of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In 1996 he was honored with the Japanese Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, and as 1st Honorary President of the Latin American Congress on Dentomaxillofacial Radiology (Bahia, Brazil). He served as President of the International Association of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology (1994-97) and as President of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (2009-11). Dr Farman was Chair of the Oral Radiology Section of AADS (now ADEA) in 1987-88. He was the Founder and Organizer of the International Congress on Computed Maxillofacial Imaging.
Dr. Farman served as Scientific Editor of the Oral Radiology Section of "Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology (1988-95; 2005-09), and currently serves as the Radiology Section Editor for "Cranio" as well as Deputy Editor of the "International Journal of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery," and Associate Editor of "Oral Radiology" as well as serving on several other journal editorial and advisory boards.
He is a voting member of the international DICOM Standards Committee (representing ADA 2000-2010, and AAOMR from 2010) and was founding chair of DICOM WG 22 - Dentistry (2003-13). He is a founding member of the ADA Codes Maintenance Committee, and a Board Member on the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission for Computed Tomography (IAC-CT). He serves on the IHE Technical Advisory Committees both for Radiology and for Dentistry and as a member of the dental Advisory Board for the Image Gently Alliance. He is a member of the Advisory Board for the International Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery Foundation. He is a member of the Emeritus Medical Staff of Norton's Hospital.
Dr. Farman was a Fulbright lecturer to India in 1987, and Consultant to the Ministry of Health of Singapore in 2012. Dr. Farman has contributed in excess of 400 journal articles and has authored, co-authored, edited, or co-edited more than 20 texts and proceedings. He lectures nationally and internationally. He received academic tenure at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa (1977) and at the University of Louisville (1982). He is currently registered as a specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (Kentucky Board of Dentistry), and as. Specialist in Oral Pathology (Health Professions Council of South Africa), and was recognized on the specialty list of the General Dental Council/Royal College of Radiologists/Royal College of Surgeons of England. He has worked at the University of Louisville since January 1980.
