Abstract: The Third Annual Andrew Chamblin Memorial Lecture will be held at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, April 19, 2011. The talk will be presented in the Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium on the campus of the University of Louisville.

Please join us as we again celebrate the life of Dr. H. Andrew Chamblin, who was Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of Louisville until his untimely passing in 2006. We welcome as our distinguished speaker Dr. Alan H. Guth, the Victor F. Weisskopf Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and author of "The Inflationary Universe".  One of the cornerstones of modern cosmology is the idea that the Universe expanded dramatically for a period of time shortly after its birth in the Big Bang - what is now known as inflation. One of the broader implications of the theory is the possibility that eternal inflation can create a “Multiverse” consisting of an infinite series of “Pocket Universes” with different physical properties. Anything that can happen will happen an infinite number of times!

Alan H. Guth is the Victor F. Weisskopf Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his research has centered on understanding what particle physics can tell us about the history of the universe, and what cosmology can tell us about the fundamental laws of nature. In 1981 he first proposed a new cosmological model he dubbed inflation, which has led to our modern cosmological models.
